4A – Daily News – Tuesday, January 18, 2011 WORLD BRIEFING Unity government announced in Tunisia TUNIS, Tunisia (AP) — Tunisia’s prime minister announced a national unity government Monday, allow- ing opposition into the coun- try’s leadership for the first time in a bid to quell civil unrest following the ouster of President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali amid huge street protests. However, at least one union leader said the changes were not enough and predicted demonstra- tions would continue until all key figures in the old regime had been swept from power. Tunisia’s government said more than 78 protesters and other civilians have died in the protests, which have swept the country for a month. Interior Minister Ahmed Friaa said 94 civil- ians have been injured. And he said members of security forces also have been killed, but he did not say how many. Although Ben Ali fled the country on Friday, after 23 years in power, members of his government will play prominent roles in the new unity government. Prime Minister Mohamed Ghan- nouchi, a longtime ally of Ben Ali, and several top ministers have retained their posts. Ghannouchi, who has been premier since 1999, said the current ministers of defense, interior and foreign affairs would also keep their posts. He announced as well that political prisoners would be freed, as one of an array of measures aimed at loosening up a political sys- tem that for decades was effectively under one-party rule. Gabrielle Giffords says his wife’s condition has improved so much that she has been able to smile and give him a neck rub as he has kept a near-constant vigil at her hospital bedside. The interactions with astronaut Mark Kelly are new signs of Giffords’ impressive progress in recovering from a gunshot wound to the head at a polit- ical event nine days ago. Giffords still cannot speak, because of a tube in her throat that is helping her breathe. ‘‘She’s in the ICU. You know, gone through this traumatic injury. And she spent 10 minutes giving me a neck massage,’’ Kelly explained in an interview with Diane Sawyer to air Tuesday on ABC. ‘‘It’s so typical of her that no matter how bad the situation might be for her, you know, she’s looking out for other peo- ple.’’ Such encounters indicate higher levels of functioning, implying that ‘‘she’s recog- nizing him and interacting, perhaps in an old familiar way with him,’’ said Dr. Michael Lemole. Dr. Randall Friese said Kelly also told doctors he saw Giffords smile. He said sometimes people see what they want to see, but that ‘‘if he says she’s smiling, I buy it.’’ Steve Jobs takes medical leave of absence SEATTLE (AP) — Apple Inc. CEO Steve Jobs is taking his second medical leave of absence in two years, raising serious ques- tions about his health and the leadership of a company at the forefront of a personal computing revolution. He is Apple’s public face, its master showman and its savior since he returned in 1997 after a 12- year hiatus to rescue the company from financial ruin. Investors in recent years have pinned much of their faith in the company on Jobs himself, sending shares tumbling on every bit of news or rumor of his ailing health. Apple did not say how long Jobs would be on leave. The company also did not provide any further information about Jobs’ cur- rent condition, including whether Jobs is acutely ill, whether the leave is related to his 2009 liver transplant or whether he is at home or in a hospital. Apple spokesman Steve Dowling referred to the text of Jobs’ note to employees, which was made public Monday. The majority of Apple’s board members did not immediately return mes- sages seeking comment. Millard Drexler, CEO of J. Crew Group, was unavail- able for comment according to a spokeswoman. Former U.S. Vice President Al Gore referred a reporter to Apple’s press office. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of peace lauded ATLANTA (AP) — The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy as a preacher of peace and tolerance was lauded Monday as Ameri- cans marked his memorial day just over a week after the shootings in Arizona that killed 6 people and seriously wounded a congresswoman. Attorney General Eric Holder, speaking at King’s former church in Atlanta, praised him as ‘‘our nation’s greatest drum major of peace’’ and said the Jan. 8 bloodshed was a call to recommit to King’s values of nonviolence, tolerance, compassion and justice. ‘‘Last week a senseless A Clean, Reliable, Trustworthy, Chimney Company... President Barack Obama, in Washington, said part of King’s legacy was about service and urged Americans to get out into their communities — a step he suggested would have special meaning following the shootings. ‘‘After a painful week where so many of us were focused on the tragedy, it’s good for us to remind our- selves of what this country is all about,’’ he told reporters as he and first lady Michelle Obama took part in a paint- ing project at a school on Capitol Hill. Surprise return of ex- strongman ’Baby Doc’ PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) — Former Hait- ian dictator Jean-Claude ‘‘Baby Doc’’ Duvalier ensconced himself Monday in a high-end hotel follow- ing his surprise return to a country deep in crisis, leav- ing many to wonder if the once-feared strongman will prompt renewed conflict in the midst of a political stale- mate. Duvalier met with allies inside the hotel in the hills above downtown Port-au- Prince and spoke publicly only through emissaries, who gave vague explana- tions for his sudden and mysterious appearance — nearly 25 years after he was forced into exile by a popu- lar uprising against his bru- tal regime. Henry Robert Sterlin, a former ambassador who said he was speaking on behalf of Duvalier, por- trayed the 59-year-old for- mer ‘‘president for life,’’ as merely a concerned elder statesmen who wanted to see the effects of the devas- tating Jan. 12, 2010, earth- quake on his homeland.
