2A – Daily News – Tuesday, January 18, 2011 Community people&events Young Marines recruit training orientation The Tehama County Young Marines are recruiting for their next Recruit Training, Series 1101, formerly known as Boot Camp, to be held from April 18 to 25 during Easter vacation week. A series of Recruit Orientation meetings will begin 10- 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 29, at the Sunrise Bible Fellowship Youth Center located near the corner of Monroe and Dou- glas Streets. At least two Recruit Orientation meetings are required of prospective recruits. Interested youth between the ages of 8 and 16 years must also bring at least one par- ent or legal guardian and will watch two videos from Young Marines National Headquarters in Washington, D. C. There will also be a questions and answer period. Inter- ested youth and parents may take home the required forms and are encouraged to return them as soon as possible. The Young Marines is not a recruiting tool for the mili- tary, but they are involved in addressing many of our youth problems in the communities across the nation. The Tehama County Young Marines mission statement is: "To create a culture of claiming victory over drugs, alcohol, tobacco, abuse, bullying, gangs and violence." One of the unit's goals this year is to address the recently reported issue that Tehama County has the highest percent- age of tobacco use in the state. Tobacco has been long con- sidered the gateway drug of choice, especially within our youth population. Recruit Training, from April 18 – 25, (Monday through Friday), begins promptly when recruits begin arriving at 3:30 a.m. (that's in the morning) or "zero dark thirty." Par- ents will be expected to drop them off before 4 a.m. when the gate will close. Recruit Training will be held at the Sacramento River Discovery Center, 1000 Sale Lane, Red Bluff. Graduation ceremonies will be on Friday, April 25, at 12 Noon. Adults who want to volunteer a couple hours each month who have a skill they may want to teach are encouraged to apply. More information on the Tehama County Young Marines can be located at www.tehamacountyyoung- marines.com or by calling 840-0345. Some costs are involved but affordable payments can be made and possible scholarships may also be available. The national web site for the Young Marines is www.youngmarines.com.
