LETTER TO THE EDITOR This Is Your Hospital — 550 Physicians Strong by MIKE NAGOWSKI and CHRIS AUL Solid Local Trusted Effective Respected This local community paper is free to our readers. We've been that way from the beginning. We won't change that even in the toughest of times. But we do improve this paper every issue. We won't stand still as the market changes. Giving readers and advertisers the best value is our goal. Over the years we have become the marketplace for our community. And while other media might be shrinking, we are growing. That growth will continue, hand-in-hand, with our community. We'll continue working for you. Free Papers Working For You A lot of folks remember when Cape Fear Valley Medical Center was half the size it is today. Back then we had about 200 physicians on the medical staff. Today, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center has nearly 500 beds, and the medical staff has more than doubled to 550 physicians. That's a milestone achievement for any hospital. And it's not just about sheer numbers. Just as important are the depth and breadth of our medical staff. With more than 50 different specialties and subspecialties, it rivals that of many academic medical centers. Recently, we added a new specialty to the list: Intensivists. We have looked forward to the start of our Intensivist Program with great anticipation. Just as Hospitalists take care of patients in the hospital, Intensivists take care of patients in the Intensive Care Unit. Why is this program so important to patient care? ICU patients are very sick; they have complicated medical needs. Of the more than 2 million patients nationwide who are admitted to urban intensive care units each year, approximately 200,000 die. A growing body of evidence suggests that quality of care in hospital ICUs is strongly influenced by Intensivist Programs like the one we have at Cape Fear Valley. We anticipate our program will provide a number of benefits for our ICU patients: • Shorter hospital stays • Improved patient outcomes • Improved continuity of care I'm very proud of the skill and innovation our medical staff demonstrates on a daily basis. When you come to our Emergency Department, whether you need a neurosurgeon, neurologist, cardiologist or urologist, you'll receive the care you need 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. We know you have choices for your healthcare. But if you're looking for innovative physicians with the dedication and skill to make a positive difference in your life, choose Cape Fear Valley. We can give you 550 reasons why you should.
