Emanuel’s decision to quit the White House and run for Chicago mayor had been so well known that even Obama mocked the lack of suspense. But it still felt like the most important transition to date for the Obama operation, which has been fueled for nearly two years by Emanuel’s demands, drive and discipline. At an emotional farewell, Obama said, ‘‘We are all very excited for Rahm, but we’re also losing an incomparable leader of our staff.’’ Emanuel choked up as he said his goodbye. Into the breech steps Rouse, an Obama senior adviser known around the White House as a problem-fixing, media-shy strategist and organizer. Rouse is expected to serve as interim chief for several months and may eventually get the perma- nent job, as the White House is in the midst of reviewing a broader shake-up. Considered the most con- suming and influential staff job in American politics, the chief of staff shapes nearly every- thing at the White House — how the president spends his time, how he pursues his strate- gies on foreign and domestic policy, how he deals with a politically deadlocked Con- gress and a skeptical electorate. NJ student’s death becomes states as it examines whether it rushed the foreclosure process for thousands of homeowners without reading the documents. Bank of America is not yet able to estimate how many homeowners cases will be affected, a spokesman for the nation’s largest bank says. A bank official acknowl- edged in a legal proceeding in February that she signed up to 8,000 foreclosure documents a month and typically didn’t read them. The Associated Press obtained the document Friday. The executive’s admission adds the nation’s largest bank to a growing list of mortgage com- panies whose employees signed documents in foreclosure cases without verifying the informa- tion in them. Uncovering it gives ‘‘us all a chance to look at this and — even as we are appalled at what was done — to redouble our efforts to make sure something like this could never happen again,’’ said Dr. Francis Collins, director of the National Institutes of Health. The NIH-funded experiment, which ran from 1946 to 1948, was uncovered by a Wellesley College medical historian. It apparently was conducted to test if penicillin, then relatively new, could prevent some sexually transmitted infections. The study came up with no useful informa- tion and was hidden for decades. ‘‘We are outraged that such reprehensible research could 22755 Antelope Blvd. Red Bluff, CA 96080 (530) 527-9166 touchstone NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — ‘‘Things will get easier; people’s minds will change,’’ Ellen DeGeneres pleads in an Internet video, staring into the camera, her voice breaking. ‘‘And you should be alive to see it.’’ Just as the murder of Matthew Shepard galvanized the gay com- munity around hate-crime legisla- tion more than a decade ago, the suicide of a Rutgers University student whose sex life was splashed on the Internet has activists rallying around their lat- est cause: telling tormented gay teens they just need to hang on for a while, that they’ll live through it. Bullying and harassment of young gays and lesbians, and the suicides they have caused, have long been a major topic in gay publications and among activists. But celebrities and others have seized on Clementi’s shocking suicide to call attention to the issue. Prosecutors say Clementi’s roommate and another student used a webcam to broadcast on the Internet live images of the 18- year-old Rutgers University fresh- man having an intimate encounter with another man. Clementi jumped off the George Washing- ton Bridge three days later. His body was identified Thursday. A report by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission determined that the so-called ‘‘flash crash’’ occurred when the trading firm executed a computerized selling program in an already stressed market. The firm’s trade, worth $4.1 billion, led to a chain of events the ended with market players swiftly pulling their money from stock market, the report said. The report does not name the trading firm. But only one trade that day fit the description in the report. The firm Waddell & Reed, based in Overland Park, Kan., has acknowledged making such a trade that day. The free-fall highlighted the complexity and perils of the fast- evolving securities markets. Elec- tronic trading platforms now com- pete with the traditional exchanges. Rick Sanchez gone from CNN NEW YORK (AP) — CNN says that anchor Rick Sanchez has been fired, a day after he called Jon Stewart a bigot while on a radio show. Sanchez said on a satellite radio program Thursday that Stewart is bigoted toward ‘‘everybody else that’s not like him.’’ The Comedy Central ‘‘Daily Show’’ host has fre- quently poked fun at Sanchez on the air. Also in the interview, Sanchez had mocked a sugges- tion that Jews are a minority. Stewart is Jewish. The statement from CNN says Sanchez ‘‘is no longer with the company.’’ In it, the net- work also thanks Sanchez ‘‘for his years of service’’ and wish- es him well.
