4B – Daily News – Saturday, October 2, 2010 Religion Faith&Worship Church news St. Peters Oktoberfest St. Peters Episcopal Church will host an Oktoberfest cel- ebration 5-9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the corner of Jefferson and Elm streets in Red Bluff, featuring a street dance, Ger- man music and food and raffle items. Tickets are $10 each, $5 for children, and include dinner and one drink. Additional drinks will be available for pur- chase. For tickets, visit the church office or buy at the door. A higher calling God did not call us to "walk on sandals filled with thorns and bri- ars." No, He called us to walk on sandals that are lined with the enriched anointing of the Holy Spirit – sandals, so comfortable, that it seems we are walking on air." Can you picture, in your mind, a weary traveler having to stop every few steps, to remove thorns and bri- ars? Not only would it be time con- suming, slowing progress down, but the painful effort would also cause emotional pain. The slow progress would cause so much emotional distraction, that the traveler would be "side tracked" from completing tasks that are vital to life. There are two roads to travel in Courtesy photo Missionaries to Brazil to lead local services Sunday Missionaries to Brazil, the Rev. Terrance and Beth John- son, will minister at Abundant Life Fellowship Sunday at 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. services. The public is invited. The Johnsons have been Assemblies of God missionar- ies to Brazil since 1989, working primarily with Bernhard Johnson Ministries in various areas of ministry. They direct Brazil Extension School of Theology and Brazil Advanced School of Theology, which together have over 21,000 stu- dents throughout Brazil and in nine other countries. Since 1979, these two schools have graduated more than 40,000 students who are active in their church or are in full-time ministry. The Johnsons direct Children Of Brazil Outreach, that has helped build 15 schools, daycare centers and a hospital in needy areas of the country, besides distributing Bible cur- riculum and AIDS awareness materials in public and pri- vates schools that are required by law to offer religious edu- cation classes. Since 2009, the Johnsons are the representa- tives in Brazil for Latin America ChildCare and its child sponsorship program, with the Antonette Johnson School in the city of Varginha as their first sponsorship project. The Johnsons are involved in youth and music ministry in the local church they attend in the city of Campinas, hav- ing served for six years as the student ministries pastors and Beth directing three choirs. Terry serves as assistant pastor for the church in Varginha that was founded by his mis- sionary grandparents, along with its 20 satellite churches in the region. The Varginha church is presently building new facilities to seat 1,500 worshippers. The Johnsons have hosted 15 HealthCare Ministries medical outreaches and one Convoy Of Hope distribution outreach that have ministered to 18,000 people, of which 6,000 made a decision for Christ. The Johnsons will be returning to Brazil in mid-2011 to resume their work in these important and needy areas. our life. One road is filled with busyness, all for the sake of just doing stuff. The other road is cen- tered with activity that has Eternal Value. We need a "measuring rod" to help us understand the difference between the road that pertains to eternity and the road that is empty of eternal values. The "measuring rod" is found in God’s Word, the Bible. In the Bible we can find all of the answers to life. This is an affirming word to Christians, for we all know this. Here I am preaching to the "choir." Yes, you think, "that’s sure true." But, how about your sandals? Has life engulfed you with thorns and briars? In your daily walk with the Lord, are you constantly stopping along the way needing to pick them out? I know you are, for Satan makes sure that such thorny prob- lems occur in our lives. Fellow child of God and precious in the Lord’s sight, please remember your calling. God has called each one of us to be so centered/focused upon Him and the things of eternity, that we can "kick the thorns aside" and travel on the road of Eternal Values. I love God’s teaching on the full armor of God. The NLT says this about our shoes: "For shoes, put on the peace that comes from the Good News so that you will be fully pre- pared." (Ephesians 6:15) On a long and dusty trail our sandals can certainly become dirty and full of thorns. After many years of "Thorn picking," I have found that the Good News, packed full of God’s promises, is the best thorn remover and cleanser in dealing with uncomfort- able "sandals!" Every day we must remember to check out our sandals and remove any thorns, prior to beginning our daily walk. And – are we fully armed by putting on the full armor of God? Are we remember- ing to cover ourselves with the blood of Jesus, and are we declaring Psalm 91 over our life Being a "fellow thorn picker," I admit to arising in the morning and sometimes just slipping into my sandals to begin my day. At times we are caught unawares by circum- stances, but let us determine to remember that we are seated with Christ in the heavenly realms. Know that Ephesians 2:6 is God’s promise, that we need not live in an earthly mind set, but that our eyes are set on Kingdom purposes. "For he raised us from the dead along with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ Jesus." (NLT) When our minds are habitually centered upon the things of God our sandals will fit better too. "Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth." (Colossians 3:2 NKJ) God himself has fitted us with the "right size." Let’s not allow the tri- als of this life to cause our walk with the Lord to be off track. Even though King David had his Patricia Martin GodTalk "thorny" days, he spent time prais- ing and worshiping God. He was determined to walk with God in the beauty of His holiness. We need to pur- sue the same heartfelt desire as King David. "You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession. As a result, you can show oth- ers the goodness of God, for he called you out of the darkness into his wonderful light." (1 Peter 2:9 NLT) "The righteous person faces many troubles, but the LORD comes to the res- cue each time." (Psalm 34:19 NLT) Yes, we sometimes deal with thorns but they need not overcome us, for indeed we walk on sandals enriched with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. Being aware of God’s truth, the body of Christ can rejoice together in knowing that we are called to live in the heavenly realm, not the mundane and earth bound realm. So our sandals are comfortable and well fitted for our journey – victoriously homeward bound! Patricia Martin is a missionary/evangelist and a Recognized Ministry with the Assemblies of God. She is the founder of God's Precious Jewels, Inc., a ministry to Native American children and their families. The ministry began in 2000, and has provided thousands of free Bibles and other Gospel literature in California, Nevada, Arizona, Idaho and South Dakota.
