2B – Daily News – Saturday, October 2, 2010 GIANTS (Continued from page 1B) against the Padres. San Diego snapped the Giants’ four-game winning streak and scored six runs for the first time in 10 games since a 6-0 road win over the Dodgers on Sept. 21. David Eckstein scored on a wild pitch in the fifth for the Padres, who are 6-1 at AT&T Park this year. They were unfazed by a sellout crowd of 42,409 orange-clad fans waving rally towels. Richard beat the Giants for the fourth time in six starts this season. The left- hander allowed three runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings. Cody Ross doubled with two outs in the sixth against Ryan Webb, putting runners on second and third and bringing Andres Torres to the plate as the tying run. Joe Thatcher came in to face Torres, who chopped an infield single about 15 feet down the third-base line to drive in Juan Uribe and cut San Diego’s lead to 6-4. Luke Gregerson then got Freddy Sanchez to line out to center, ending the inning. Pinch-hitter Mike Fontenot led off the eighth with a single off Gonzalez’s glove at first. Ross reached two outs later on an infield hit. Manager Bud Black then turned to closer Heath Bell to face Torres and he grounded out. Bell recorded the final four outs for his 46th save in 49 chances, his sixth in seven tries going more than one inning. With Sanchez aboard on a leadoff walk, Aubrey Huff hit a deep fly to Buster Posey goes airborne while tagging out Miguel Tejada during Friday night’s game in San Francisco. right that Will Venable caught nearly at the wall. Sanchez took off at contact, rounded second and was doubled up. Bell walked to home and slapped hands with catcher Yorvit Torreal- ba. Buster Posey grounded out to end it. The Padres won the first eight meetings between the rivals to start the season, but the Giants took three of four at Petco Park from Sept. 9- 12. Rowand had only two hits in 21 at-bats in Septem- ber. This was his second career pinch-hit homer, both in 2010. He had the other July 26 against Florida. Miguel Tejada drew a two-out, nine-pitch walk in the first before Gonzalez doubled. Tejada bolted home and came sliding in headfirst but was thrown out on a perfect sequence from right fielder Jose Guillen to second baseman Sanchez and then catcher Posey, who barely tagged Tejada. Cain, who had won his last four decisions, was done after four innings for his sec- ond-shortest outing this year. NOTES: Rowand homered for the first time since Aug. 11. ... The Giants are 7-30 this year when giving up six or more runs. ... Cain allowed three or more homers for just the fourth time in his career and six or more runs for the 16th time. ... Guillen had his 107th career outfield assist, 96 in RF. ... Torres, who missed only 11 games after his Sept. 12 emergency appendectomy, was chosen as this year’s ‘‘Willie Mac’’ Award winner named for Hall of Famer Willie McCovey. ... Ross also doubled in the fifth to give him a 10-game hitting streak. Barton homers twice, Cahill earns 18th win for A’s Athletics 9 Seattle 0 SEATTLE (AP) — At some point, Trevor Cahill will take a moment to reflect how good his 2010 season was. On Friday night, he was just trying to accept there were no more starts to look forward to. ‘‘It feels weird know- ing I don’t really have to do anything the next few days,’’ Cahill said. ‘‘In my head I’m stuck still think- ing (about) running, lift- ing, doing all that stuff tomorrow. It’s going to be weird coming here and not having to do any of that.’’ Daric Barton homered in his first two at-bats, including a grand slam just inside the right-field SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Even Andres Torres had his doubts he could return from an emergency appendectomy in time to help the Giants in the stretch run. Torres had the procedure Sept. 12 in San Diego and played for San Francisco again Sept. 24 — missing all of 11 games. He recovered far more quickly than any- body expected thanks to his fitness level and determina- tion. Manager Bruce Bochy had all but ruled out his cen- ter fielder and leadoff man CARDS (Continued from page 1B) second-and-9 for what turned into a touchdown run that spanned 54 yards. One more Whited score in the fourth finally put the game away for Corning. Though pleased with the outcome, Studer was well aware that his team needs to improve in vari- ous areas, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, if it intends to com- pete with West Valley next week. “We’re playing a better team that has a whole lot of speed and uses a multi- ple back offense like Oroville,” Studer said of his upcoming contest. “We need to work on our pass coverage and tackling on the perimeter. foul pole, and Cahill pitched seven sharp innings for his 18th victo- ry to lead the Oakland Athletics over the Seattle Mariners 9-0. Cahill (18-8) finished the season with career bests in wins, innings, ERA and strikeouts. His 18 victories are tied for fourth-most in the Ameri- can League and he low- ered his ERA to 2.97. Not bad for a pitcher who started the season at Triple-A Sacramento. ‘‘The biggest thing I was able to finish healthy and stay strong,’’ Cahill said. ‘‘I think the numbers are a product of a lot of things, good defense, good run support. It makes it a lot easier for me.’’ The numbers are pretty for the remainder of the reg- ular season. Bochy said he had no choice but to prepare as if he wouldn’t have Torres available. ‘‘After the surgery, I did- n’t think I’d come back,’’ Torres said. ‘‘It was a little bit frustrating to be honest with you. Thank God I’m back and with the team. ... I’ve been working my whole life to be where I am now.’’ On Friday, the Giants recognized the ever-positive Torres as this year’s ‘‘Willie Mac’’ Award winner. The We didn’t tackle well on the edges.” Nick Wilson is a sports writer for the Chico Enterprise-Record. impressive. Cahill made just one start in April, spending most of the first month with Sacramento. Despite missing a few potential starts, Cahill is the first American League pitcher 22 or younger to win 18 or more games since Bret Saberhagen won 20 games as a 21- year-old for the 1985 Kansas City Royals. His final outing was impressive. Cahill threw 96 pitches through seven innings, mowing through Seattle’s meager lineup that fea- tured a number of regu- lars. He struck out the side looking in the second inning, part of his six strikeouts on the night. Cahill allowed five hits — all singles — walked two and only once, in the Torres’ comeback provides big lift for Giants honor is named for Hall of Famer Willie McCovey and is voted on by the players, coaches and training staff to recognize the team’s most inspirational player both on the field and in the club- house. Torres was honored in a pregame ceremony, pre- sented with his award plaque by McCovey. Other past winners also took part in the festivities. Torres received a rousing ovation when he came to the plate in the bottom of the first, then he drew an 11-pitch walk from Clayton Richard. But with the defeat, the Mariners assured them- selves of having the sec- ond overall pick in next June’s amateur draft. Barton made sure of that early. With just eight homers entering Friday, Barton jumped on a 3-2 pitch from French in the first, driving it deep into the right-field seats. An inning later, French had already allowed two runs to score and received a visit from pitching coach Carl Willis when Barton hit a 1-2 fastball for just the second grand slam of the season by the A’s. Barton’s slam came after an RBI infield single by Cliff Pennington and a bases-loaded walk to Rajai Davis. Barton added an RBI double to left-cen- ter in the sixth off reliever Chris Seddon, finishing with six RBIs before leav- ing in the seventh with a sore leg. ‘‘Considering my num- bers with the bases loaded suck it feels really good,’’ said Barton, now 5 for 15 with the bases loaded this season. ‘‘I got a pitch up and put a good swing on it. Loved hitting one out.’’ Mark Ellis added an RBI single in the fourth off French (5-7), who allowed eight hits and eight earned runs in four innings, the worst of his 13 starts for the Mariners. About the only positive offensively for the Mariners was first base- man Justin Smoak extend- ing his hitting streak to eight games, the longest run of his young career. ‘‘All I can say is it was- n’t my night. It’s going to happen. It’s not very fun, not the way you want to end the season,’’ French said. NOTES: Oakland needs wins in the final two games to avoid a fourth straight losing season. MCT photo
