Saturday, October 2, 2010 – Daily News – 3B Vikings too much for Spartans SOCCER Pleasant Valley 4 Red Bluff 1 By RICH GREENE DN Sports Editor The Spartans couldn’t duplicate a strong first half effort, Friday, and fell 4-1 to the visiting Pleasant Valley Vikings. Outside of a mental lapse in the first minute the Spartans battled with Pleasant Valley through- out the first half. The Vikings scored in the first minute off a cor- ner kick that fell into the box and put into the back of the net without much of an effort from the Spartans’ defense to clear it. But Gonzalez’s shot to an empty net was cleared off the line by fullback Tyler Howard. Pleasant Valley then went up 2-0 when a Viking hit a volley off a cross into the box. The Spartans respond- ed with a solid 20 min- utes of play to close the first half and got on the board themselves. Gonzalez dribbled across the Pleasant Val- ley box and beat the goal- tender to the far left cor- ner to cut the score to 2- 1. Enrique Ascencio, Skylar Garcia and Gon- zalez all had strong chances to level the score in the first half, but the Spartans couldn’t find the net again.
