After signing with the Jaguars as an undrafted free agent in April, McKenzie had been cut by the team during the summer. Top returner Justin Blackmon is reportedly recovering from groin surgery and will miss the first four games of the regular season due to suspension. Fasnacht pointed out that McKenzie is the secondtallest wide receiver on the Jacksonville roster. "He's in a position where receiver is an open position for them right now," Fasnacht said. "Physically, it looks like he has a chance to do some things; if you read the local press, receiver is a huge need that they're trying to fix. If he can do something good, he'll have a chance to stick there." 49ERS ATHLETICS 1:05 p.m. Gay failed drug test at natl's Monday's games MLB Toronto Athletics CSNC 7:05 p.m. CONCACAF bans Klinsmann for Gold Cup final CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. soccer team will be missing a key figure for the Gold Cup final against Panama on Sunday: their coach. Jurgen Klinsmann was suspended for one game Friday by CONCACAF's disciplinary committee, the result of his ejection in the 87th minute of a 3-1 victory over Honduras in the semifinals Wednesday. Klinsmann was dismissed ''for showing dissent towards the referee by throwing the ball in a violent manner,'' the disciplinary committee found, and said FIFA rules require anyone ejected from a match to be suspended for the following game. The decision cannot be appealed. ''I don't think it changes too much,'' U.S. captain DaMarcus Beasley said Friday. ''It's always good to have him on the bench, but he'll give his wisdom before the game ... make sure we get off on the right foot. But it's not going to be the same not seeing his face on the sideline, giving us instructions when we need it and being the enthusiastic person that he is on the bench. Especially, when we score or he needs to tell us something if we need to change something.'' Klinsmann was irate Wednesday after the referee failed to issue cards on a series of hard fouls against the Americans. He could be seen yelling and gesturing angrily in the direction of the referee, and was told to leave the field after he slammed a ball into the ground. Klinsmann later apologized, saying he acted out of frustration. ''I was talking to the ref as well. There weren't any cards,'' Beasley said. ''I got hit three, four times in somewhat the same sequence, and they didn't call anything but a foul. So I could understand his frustration. I was frustrated.'' The Americans are seeking their fifth Gold Cup title. They also are looking to extend their record 10-game winning streak in all matches. By EDDIE PELLS and PAT GRAHAM allows little opportunities to improve — other than from within. "When you've done it so many times and you're OK at a lot of positions, we try to find little nitpicky things to get better on," cornerback Carlos Rogers said. The departures of All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson and nose tackle Isaac Sopoaga left the most glaring vacancies to fill among the starting unit. At the other nine positions, San Francisco still seems stacked. The 49ers ranked third in total defense (294.4 yards), fourth in yards rushing allowed (94.2) and fourth in yards passing allowed AP Sports Writers Sprinter Tyson Gay failed more than one drug test this year, recording one of his positives at the U.S. championships in June, where he won the 100 and 200 meters, The Associated Press learned on Friday. Earlier this month, Gay revealed he had tested positive in an out-of-competition test he took May 16. Three people familiar with the case told the AP that Gay had multiple positives this year. One of those people said one positive came at nationals and the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency has notified him of that result. The people did not want their names used because the doping case against Gay is ongoing and the details have not been made public. Gay's representatives did not immediately respond to attempts by See 49ERS, page 2B See FAILED, page 2B AP photo San Francisco 49ers' Anquan Boldin during NFL football training camp on Thursday in Santa Clara Anquan Boldin also helping defense SANTA CLARA (AP) — With so much talent returning on defense, several San Francisco 49ers players have taken advantage of an intriguing new resource in training camp. That being Anquan Boldin. The versatile wide receiver said Friday that curiosity has simmered from his defensive teammates about how opponents scheme against the unit since he joined the 49ers this offseason. And nobody in practice might know better than Boldin, who caught six passes for 104 yards and a touchdown to help the Baltimore Ravens beat San Francisco 34-31 in the Super Bowl. "A lot of guys came up to me and asked me, 'What did the scouting report have on it? What did it say?'" Boldin said. "Things like that. I've had a chance to communicate that to guys." While he's not going to make those schemes public knowledge, Boldin has passed along that information to teammates while doing his own job catching passes from Colin Kaepernick. Picking Boldin's brain for ideas is just one of many ways the 49ers defense — among the NFL's best the past two seasons — is trying to improve from within. After all, San Francisco has almost everybody back on defense again. That continuity helps build upon past success, but it also NFL Hayden cleared for Raiders' 1st camp practice NAPA (AP) — D.J.
