2B Daily News – Tuesday, July 9, 2013 A'S (Continued from page 1B) nities when he worked a flawless ninth. Jed Lowrie had two of Oakland's three hits and one of its runs. The A's (53-37) improved to a season-high 16 games over .500 and held on to first place in the American League West. Jose Tabata, Pedro Alvarez and Barmes each had two hits for the Pirates (53-35), who have lost five of seven to lose their grip on the majors' best record — and on first place in the NL Central. They trail the St. Louis Cardinals by a half-game. Locke faced one more than the minimum through six innings. Oakland's first run came on Josh Donaldson's sacrifice fly in the fourth. Lowrie had the Athletics' first hit of the game, a double off the wall in right-center. He advanced to third on a wild pitch — catcher Russell Martin's throw beat him, but Alvarez's tag MURRAY (Continued from page 1B) Perhaps unsurprisingly, the national papers — all of them — featured Murray on their front pages. ''History in his hands,'' headlined the Daily Mirror. Across the top of the Daily Express were the words ''Magical Murray.'' The Guardian had the simplest front page — a huge photo of Murray kissing the trophy with ''Champion'' written across the bottom. According to the BBC, a peak of 17.3 million people in Britain watched the match on television. Last year's final, in which Murray lost to Roger Federer, reached a peak of 17 swiped through too early. ''There's nothing I can do there,'' Alvarez said. ''Try to tag him and run into it. It's just, that happens 100 times and 99 out of 100 times I'll tag him, you know? Just one of those plays.'' The Pirates' only run came in the bottom of the inning when Barmes scored on a two-out infield single by Tabata. McCutchen — an All-Star selection who earlier extended his hitting streak to 10 games — came up and hit the ball hard into the gap, but Crisp thwarted Pittsburgh's chance to tie or take the lead. ''Right when I hit it, I knew he was going to catch it,'' McCutchen said. ''It's Coco Crisp and he's fast. I told myself, 'I'm catching that ball too, if I'm out there playing.' ''Off the bat, I knew there was a chance it would fall but there was more of a chance he was going to catch it.'' NOTES: Oakland is 10-0 all-time against Pittsburgh — the only team in the majors to have never lost to another team in the majors. ... Pirates 2B Neil Walker sat out his second consecutive game since leaving Saturday's game because of discomfort in his right side. He worked out during batting practice. ... Before the game, the A's recalled 2B Grant Green from Triple-A Sacramento. The 2009 first-round pick went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts in his major league debut. Oakland designated INF Adam Rosales for assignment. Melvin said Green will regularly be in the lineup. ... Rookie righthanders will face each other during the middle game of the series Tuesday: The Pirates' Gerrit Cole (4-1, 3.94) against the A's Dan Straily (5-2, 4.52). Straily is 2-0 with an 0.69 ERA and .119 opponents' batting average in interleague play this season; Cole won each of his first four starts until losing a 6-4 decision to Philadelphia in his most recent outing Thursday. Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Bartolo Colon throws against the Pittsburgh Pirates in the first inning of the baseball game on Monday in Pittsburgh. million. Britain has been waiting generations for a men's champion (the last women's champion was Virginia Wade in 1977). But the expectations have been increasing almost exponentially over the last 15 years or so. That's when Tim Henman made the first of his four semifinals, sending the public into a frenzy of hope from 1998 to 2002. But each time, Henman failed to reach the final. A few years later, along came Murray, a kid from Scotland with a game to be reckoned with. With his mother in his box and his face often gripped in growls and grimaces, Murray became the next big British hope. He made the semifinals three years in a row before reaching the 2012 final, but then lost to seven-time champion Federer. A loss that may have changed him for the better, forever. He followed that disappointing defeat with the Olympic gold medal, beating Federer on the same Wimbledon court, on the same Wimbledon grass, a few weeks later. Then he beat Djokovic in the U.S. Open final, winning his first major title and the first Grand Slam singles title for a British man since Perry won the U.S. championships in 1936, the same year he won the third of his three straight Wimbledon titles. With last year's wins and losses behind him, Murray didn't let his second chance at his home Grand Slam slip away this time. ''In the end, inside a giddy, sun-bleached and adoring Centre Court, it felt like it was all worth the wait,'' The Guardian wrote in its top story, then continued. ''It is a genuinely gold-standard achievement for the man from Dunblane, given weight not just by the burden of history and the folkish annual summer romance of Wimbledon itself, but by the fact he is competing in one of the great periods of elite men's tennis.'' TEHAMA COUNTY DAILY NEWS RED BLUFF 885 NTY S I N C E 1 TEHAMA COU E VOICE OF THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING NEWSPAPERS AP photo NBA Warriors to sign Marreesse Speights, source says OAKLAND (AP) — A person with knowledge of the deal says the Golden State Warriors and Marreese Speights have reached an agreement on a free agent contract. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity Monday because teams can't announce moves until the new league year begins Wednesday. Terms of the deal weren't immediately known. Speights should help fill the void left by power forward Carl Landry, who agreed to a four-year, $26 million deal with the Sacramento Kings on Sunday. Speights averaged 10.2 points and 5.1 rebounds in the final 39 games with Cleveland after coming over in a trade from Memphis last season. He will likely come off the bench for the Warriors at both power forward and center.
