Nick Hoag is one of the finest science students in Physics class. He's a gifted problem solver and intuitive learner. He catches on to difficult concepts quickly and achieves mastery over difficult subject matter. Nick is also a very well rounded citizen on campus – he was a pivotal member of our varsity basketball team, helping lead them to a Northern Section Championship. He's also an important member of the varsity baseball team. Nick is a serious and dedicated student. He asks questions, is open to new understanding, and is determined to turn in quality work. In Advanced Placement English, a difficult, college level course, he earns an "A" because he is committed to being successful even with the most challenging assignments. Nick is also trustworthy, easy to get along with, and level-headed. He deserves recognition for his ambition and character. Nick is well liked by his peers and sets an excellent example for others to follow. He's respectful and hard working – the kind of young man that epitomizes the concept of Corning Union High School's Cardinal Pride. Nick strikes the perfect balance as a student athlete. He's a competitor – ferocious in his determination to be the best while maintaining the highest standards of academic achievement. A leader on campus, Nick is going to be one of the brightest stars in the class of 2014. Time and time again Omar has displayed exemplary dedication to his education. Omar regularly uses classroom recourses in order to broaden his intellectual horizons. Reading is a passion for Omar. He devours books; greedily eating up the stories and information within. From fantasy to non-fiction, reading has allowed Omar to make connections about the information discussed in class to the stories he's read. In addition to his strong reading skills, Omar attends after school tutoring; even though his grades are top notch. Omar is constantly looking for ways to strengthen his education. Reyn is an outstanding student, athlete (volleyball), musician (flute), and overall a fine young lady. She is self-motivated, works outstandingly well independently, is tenacious and persistent in whatever endeavor she undertakes. She is advanced in math, having completed Geometry this year, her writing skills are the highest that I have seen over the years, her reading is above grade-level, and she received the top science fair award for her presentation on atmospheric change. She is adaptable and takes new challenges seriously. She acquired her advanced scuba diving certification this year. One of her goals is to improve her teaching skills. Rudy Aguilar is a student who strives for perfection. In the Art Department at Corning High School, Rudy is an accomplished artist who participates in group critiques and offers insight to class discussion in Art History. Shannon Jones has been an outstanding 6th grade student this 2012-2013 school year. She continually strives for excellence by surpassing her reading goal and earning well over 100 points each trimester. In all other academics she works hard to earn good grades. Shannon not only expects excellence from herself, but also challenges those around her by effectively communicating with her peers to strive for excellence as well. It is rare to find a student who has such determination and dedication to her academics. Silvia Salazar has immersed herself into the Art Department at Corning High School. She recently entered an art competition in Red Bluff for the Tehama County Superior Court. If her painting is chosen, it will be on display in the children's waiting room. This young artist is creative and is able to identify problems and solve them in the visual arts. Silvia Salazar enjoys visual communication looking through the lens of a camera! She is insightful and well-spoken, especially for her age. Vera is a diligent student who excels in all of her classes. She leads the class in discussions and is the first to raise her hand and answer questions. Vera is a very polite and respectful person. Yitzel Maldonado is the sixth grade Student of Distinction for Gerber School. Yitzel is a "quiet" force in the classroom. Her peers know they can lean on her for help in all academic subjects. Yitzel goes the extra mile on all of her school projects and tasks. Yitzel is a 4.0 student. Her favorite subject is math. She would like to attend Butte College and eventually transfer to CSU, Chico. She wants to major in mathematics and be a math teacher. Yitzel looks forward to playing volleyball for Gerber School next year. She enjoys jumping rope in her spare time Savannah Miller is perhaps the most well rounded student I have ever known. She achieves at the highest level academically but is also extremely involved in agricultural science and leadership here in Tehama County. There are so many outstanding attributes that Savannah has but I think what really sets her apart is her leadership ability. She has been a very active member of FFA -- not only on campus but at the state level. Her experiences in this capacity have given her leadership and communication skills far beyond those of most young people her age. She has done so many outstanding things in FFA that it would be impossible to list them all here. But one that stands out is that she was selected as Tehama County's Young Farmer of the Year. She's managed to achieve more experience in her four years here at CUHS than many people do in a lifetime. Savannah has also been a four year member of our field hockey team and has been named student of the month for Exchange Club and also in Science for her outstanding performance in Physics. She is a collaborative learner that also helps her peers to better understand the challenging material we cover in class. She's one of the rare students that makes her teacher's jobs easier (and more effective) by her presence and participation. Savannah plans on pursuing a career in veterinary medicine by majoring in animal science at either Cal Poly or U.C. Davis.
