The Spartans needed about 20 of those in a thrilling comeback victory Tuesday against the Shasta Wolves in the Northern Section Division III semifinals. Emily Larzabal smashed a tworun homer to tie the game at six in the bottom of the seventh inning. Samantha Jones put down a twoout, game-winning bunt that scored Haley Harris and No. 2 Red Bluff squeezed by the visiting and third- Red Bluff High's baseball team stuns Pleasant Valley in extra innings, 6-5 seeded Wolves 7-6 to reach its sixth straight Northern Section title game. "This is maybe one of the better games I've ever been associated with in our 22 years here," Howell said. The game was a rematch of last year's section final and started and ended with bangs, not not a whimper. The Wolves jumped on the Spartans early and notched a 1-0 lead off a two-out single to right field by Nicole Batman that scored Dani Chabolla in the first inning. Chico baseball teams are just living in it — or at least, they were. Dodero's two-out RBI double tied the game for Red Bluff in the seventh inning against No. 3 Pleasant Valley, just four days after the sophomore tossed a gem against Chico High, and the No. 7 Spartans again upset a Chico team, this time rallying back to beat PV 6-5 in eight innings on Tuesday evening at Doryland Field to advance to the Division I section title game on Saturday. The Vikings had erased a 4-0 deficit crafted by the Spartans in the first two innings, with two-run frames in the fourth and fifth courtesy of a throwing error, an Ian Melton RBI single, sacrifice flies by Ryan Vlasic and Ryan Steindorf and, finally, the go-ahead fifth run on another Melton base hit. PV carried that 5-4 lead into the seventh, when Garrett Sandow greeted PV reliever Matt Price with a leadoff single. Courtesy runner Sam Hendricks was unable to advance after Price got a flyout See BASEBALL, page 2B D-IV SOFTBALL QUARTERFINAL | No. 4 Corning 4, No. 5 Willows 0 Cards shut out Honkers, advance to semis By RICH GREENE DN Staff Writer CORNING — The fourth-seeded Lady Cardinals shut out visiting Willows 4-0 Tuesday in a Northern Section Division-IV softball quarterfinal giving Corning its first playoff win since 2007. Cheyenne Boles scattered three hits and four walks and got solid defensive play behind her to hold the visiting Lady Honkers off the scoreboard. Kimmy White doubled and eventually scored on a Willows' error in the second for the only run Corning would need. The Lady Cardinals tacked on three more in the sixth behind some small ball and nifty baserunning. Willows' best chance to score came to start the game when Natalie Massa singled up the middle. Massa stole second on a Corning throw that got past second base, but she took off for third and was eventually thrown out trying to extend the play too far. Rylee Smith followed with an infield single and Morgan Hughes laid down a sacrifice fly that she beat out when the Corning throw pulled the first baseman off the bag. That gave the Lady Honkers two on with one out, but Boles settled down from there with a pair of fielder's choice groundouts to end the threat.
