Marquette shoots into Elite Eight WASHINGTON (AP) — After sweating through a pair of edge-of-your-seat comebacks, Marquette's first Sweet 16 victory in a decade was as straight and smooth as the 15-foot step-back jumper that Vander Blue nailed at the end of the first half. It helped that the Golden Eagles ran into an out-of-sorts Miami team that, in an echo of its bus ride to the Verizon Center, was able to make as much headway as a frustrated commuter in rush-hour traffic. Marquette is in the Elite Eight for the first time since 2003, getting there with an emphatic 71-61 win over Miami on Thursday night. The Golden Eagles were never threatened after taking a double-digit lead in the first half, quite the contrast from their rallies that beat Davidson by one and Butler by two earlier in the NCAA tournament. ''It's fantastic. It feels good not to have to worry about, are you going to lose on a last-second shot or are you going to win on a last-second shot?'' said Jamil Wilson, who had 16 points and eight rebounds. ''To have a cushion like that, these guys played with tremendous heart, and we did it all game.'' Blue, who made the shot that beat Davidson and led the comeback against Butler, finished with 14 points. He wasn't Marquette's leading scorer, but his offensive and defensive energy pushed the Golden Eagles to a big lead early. It's a good thing he got his buzzer-beater before halftime — for a change, Marquette didn't need one at the end of the game. ''We're so used to people not giving us credit. ... That fuels our fire,'' Blue said. The third-seeded Golden Eagles (26-8) will face either top-seeded Indiana or No. 4 seed Syracuse in the East Regional final on Saturday, aiming for a spot in the Final Foul for the first time since the 2003 team lead by current Miami Heat star Dwyane Wade. Marquette was knocked out in the round of 16 the past two years. ''after 3 tries in the sweet 16 we finally figured it out. Congrts,'' Wade tweeted after the game. This one wasn't hard to decipher. Marquette could shoot; Miami couldn't. The Hurricanes (29-7) had sentiment on their side, returning to the arena where coach Jim Larranaga led mid-major George Mason to the Final Four seven years ago, but they made only 35 percent of their field goals and missed 18 of 26 3-pointers. ''You ever have days where you're just out of sync or things just don't run along smoothly?'' Larranaga said. ''Almost like our trip over here. Our hotel is a mile and a half, it took us 45 minutes to get here. We had to go on nine different streets, weaving our way in and out of traffic and everything. And that's the way it seemed on the court. We were trying to find our way and never could. Never could get in rhythm offensively, and defensively. I don't think we communicated like we have been doing all season long.'' SWEET 16 Late 3 boosts Ohio St. past Arizona LOS ANGELES (AP) — Arizona defended Ohio State's ball screens and handoffs the same way all night — until the very last one. That's how LaQuinton Ross got open for the winning 3-pointer, and that's what the Wildcats will remember all summer after their impressive season. Ross hit the tiebreaking 3-pointer on a pass from Aaron Craft with 2 seconds to play, and Ohio State advanced to the West Regional final with a 73-70 victory over Arizona on Thursday night. The Wildcats were aware Craft had been the Buckeyes' last-second hero last weekend, and they were determined to prevent it from happening again. Unfortunately, that meant Ross got the ball with a little breathing room — and he drilled a long 3-pointer. ''We switched probably 400 handoffs and ball screens in the game,'' Arizona coach Sean Miller said. ''We didn't switch the last one. ''Whether he made the shot or not, I think we all live with it when it's challenged and we do what we're supposed to do,'' Miller added. ''But part of the reason he had such a great look at the end there was two guys went (the wrong way) when we'd switched every single handoff and ball screen from the opening tip to that one right there.'' The Wildcats (27-8) rallied from a late 10-point deficit, tying it on Mark Lyons' acrobatic three-point play with 21.8 seconds left, thanks to a foul by Ross. Arizona couldn't get off a shot on its last-second inbounds heave, and Lyons greeted Ross in the postgame handshakes with a joking, ''I can't stand you!'' ''He's a good guy,'' said Lyons, who knows Ross from summer ball. ''He's a great player, and that's one of my friends.'' Ohio State's remarkable reserve scored 14 of his 17 points in the second half for the second-seeded Buckeyes (29-7), who rallied from an early 11-point deficit. With Ross making a series of tough shots capped by that dramatic 3, Ohio State weathered the sixth-seeded Wildcats' late charge for its 11th consecutive victory since midFebruary. ''It feels great, man,'' said Ross, a once-ballyhooed recruit who has grown into a bigger role over the past two months. ''I think this is what every player grows up looking at on TV, wanting to hit that big shot for an NCAA tournament team. It just feels great right now.'' Lyons' 23 points included that gutsy three-point play for the Wildcats, who fell just short of their second NCAA regional final in four years. Solomon Hill added 16 points in his native Los Angeles, but the rest of Arizona combined for just 31 points on 10-for-29 shooting. ''I think we did better than some people thought we were supposed to,'' Hill said. ''We had some lapses in the year, but we picked it up when we were supposed to.'' The Red Bluff Warriors varsity lacrosse team grabbed a sudden-death victory against visiting Yuba City on Saturday to improve to 4-3 on its season. Red Bluff's Dylan Hoskins scored the winning goal in the first overtime period with seconds left as Wyatt Woolery assisted on the play. Tucker Gulliford and Logan LeVier each scored two while Aaron Morgan and Cody Demerath had one a piece. The win has the Warriors at third place in their conference. In the under-15 game, the Red Bluff Rhinos also earned a victory against Yuba City, 9-2, which has the team at fifth place in the SacNorth Conference. GIANTS Ramon Ramirez gets triple-A deal SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The San Francisco Giants have re-signed reliever Ramon Ramirez to a contract with TripleA Fresno. The Giants said Ramirez will be with the team for the Bay Bridge Series against the Oakland Athletics beginning Thursday night in San Francisco. He will report to Fresno following the three exhibitions. Ramirez had a 4.24 ERA in 63 2-3 innings of relief for the Mets last year. He struck out 52 batters and walked 35. ATHLETICS RHP Ramirez has elbow surgery SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Oakland Athletics right-hander Fernando Rodriguez has undergone reconstructive elbow surgery. The team said before Thursday's exhibition at the San Francisco Giants that the procedure had no complications. The surgery was performed Wednesday by Dr. Thomas Mehlhoff at the Texas Orthopedic Hospital in Houston.
