On Thursday the artists behind those pieces were honored at an open house Wine and Cheese Tasting hosted by Raley's. The pieces came from across the country and included a handcrafted 140-layer Damascus steel knife made in Vina to a Best in Show drawing of horses depicting the four seasons from a Escalon artist. Ribbons were awarded to the Top 3 artists in six different categories as well as a People's Choice award chosen by the public. Red Bluff's Larry Gay took first and third prize in Silverwork with a snake cheek spade bit and silver inlaid spurs. Among the other local winners were Red Bluff's Dan King, who took third in photography, the aforementioned knife by Vina's Steve Ellsworth that placed second in 1. Western Gear and a 67 Ft Riata by Red Bluff's Bob deBraga in the same category. The competition was judged by Marina artist Steven Lang. "Personally the history of the Old West is my attraction and that's the attraction to a lot of people," Lang said of western art. Lang said even those artists who tend to depict more modern cowboys are capturing a romantic spirit that still appeals to part of the country. Event organizer Jane Daugherty said in its third year the show is still in its learning process. Considering the Bull Sale is in its 72nd year the Art Show still has a ways to catch up. But by the pieces on display this week, the art show is making steady progress. "I (just) hope it doesn't us 72 years to make a profit," Daugherty joked. Stromer Realty Sculpture 1.
