7B Saturday, January 26, 2013 – Daily News Stocks gain, boosted by P&G, Starbucks earnings NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks rose on Wall Street in midday trading Friday after Procter & Gamble and Starbucks posted strong earnings reports. The Dow Jones industrial average rose 30 points to 13,855 as of noon Friday. The Standard & Poor's 500 advanced three points to 1,498. The Nasdaq gained eight points to 3,138. Procter & Gamble, world's largest consumer products maker, gained $2.61 to $73.02 after reporting that its quarterly income more than doubled. P&G also raised its profit forecast for its full fiscal year. Starbucks rose $1.95 to $56.54 after reporting a 13 percent increase in profits. The S&P 500 broke through 1,500 Thursday for the first time since December 2007, following a drop in claims for unemploy- Wall Street ment benefits that added to evidence that the labor market is healing. The index fell back but still ended the day fractionally higher and extended its streak of gains to seven days, the longest since October 2006. ''Earnings are growing,'' said Joe Tanious, a global market strategist at JPMorgan. ''The bottom line is that corporate America is doing exceptionally well.'' Tanious expects corporate earnings to grow at about 5 percent over the ''next year or two,'' and stock valuations to rise. Currently, the S&P 500 is trading at an average price-to-earnings ratio of 14, below an average of 15.1 for the last decade, accord- ing to FactSet data. Stocks have surged this month, with the S&P 500 advancing 5 percent this month. It jumped at the start of the year when lawmakers reached a lastminute deal to avoid the ''fiscal cliff.'' Stocks built on those gains on optimism that the housing market is recovering and the labor market is healing. The Dow Jones is up 5.7 percent on the year. Deutsche Bank analysts raised their year-end target for the index to 1,600 from 1,575. Companies will be able to maintain their earnings even if lawmakers in Washington decide to implement wide-ranging spending cuts to narrow the budget deficit, the analysts said in a note sent to clients late Thursday. CDC: Flu seems to level off except in the West New government figures show that flu cases seem to be leveling off nationwide. Flu activity is declining in most regions although still rising in the West. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says hospitalizations and deaths spiked again last week, especially among the elderly. The CDC says quick treatment with antiviral medicines is important, in particular for the very young or old. The season's first flu case resistant to treatment with Tamiflu was reported Friday. Eight more children have died from the flu, bringing this season's total pediatric deaths to 37. About 100 children die in an average flu season. There is still vaccine available although it may be hard to find. The CDC has a website that can help. 1st woman to lead in combat 'thrilled' with change LEGAL NOTICE NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING NOTICE IS HEREBY GiVEN that the Tehama County Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 10:30 am., or as soon thereafter as may be heard, in Board Chambers, 727 Oak Street, Red Bluff. RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former U.S. Army Capt. Linda L. Bray says her male superiors were incredulous upon hearing she had ably led a platoon of military police officers through a firefight during the 1989 invasion of Panama. Instead of being lauded for her actions, the first woman in U.S. history to lead male troops in combat said higher-ranking officers accused her of embellishing accounts of what happened when her platoon bested an elite unit of the Panamanian Defense Force. After her story became public, Congress fiercely debated whether she and other women had any business being on the battlefield. The Pentagon's longstanding prohibition against women serving in ground combat ended Thursday, when Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced that most combat roles jobs will now be open to female soldiers and Marines. Panetta said women are integral to the military's success and will be required to meet the same physical standards as their male colleagues. ''I'm so thrilled, excited. I think it's absolutely wonderful that our nation's military is taking steps to help women break the glass ceiling,'' said Bray, 53, of Clemmons, N.C. ''It's nothing new now in the military APNs 037-140-09 and 037-140-10 for a woman to be right beside a man in operations.'' are located approximately .25 Exxon passes Apple as most valuable company NEW YORK (AP) — Exxon has once again surpassed Apple as the world's most valuable company after the iPhone and iPad maker saw its stock price falter. Apple Inc.'s stock has been on the decline since the company's quarterly earnings report Wednesday suggested that its fast growth phase, rare for a company of its size, may be coming to an end. Apple's stock dropped 2.4 percent to $439.51 in midday trading Friday for a market capitalization of $412.7 billion. That followed a 12 percent drop on Thursday, the biggest one-day percentage drop for the company since 2008. Exxon Mobil Corp. gained 22 cents Friday to $91.57 for a market capitalization of $417.5 billion. Apple first surpassed Exxon in the summer of 2011, displacing the oil company from a perch it had held since 2005. The two companies traded places through that fall, until Apple surpassed Exxon for good in early 2012 — at least until Friday. Apple's stock price peaked in September at $705.07 on the day the iPhone 5 was released. Exxon, in the meantime, has been trading steady. Its business — oil — seems less prone to stock market ups and downs than the Cupertino, Calif.-based tech darling. Exxon, which is based in Irving, Texas, set a record in 2008 for the highest quarterly earnings by any company. In the first nine months of 2012, Exxon earned nearly $35 billion, or 10 percent more than the same period in 2011, on revenue of $367 billion. Results for the fourth quarter are due Feb. 1. miles west of Proberta, on the south side of Flores Avenue and north of Kindlespire Road. and the project area can be accessed from both roads. The street address of the subject properties is 22955 Flores Avenue (APN 037-140-10) and 22950 Kindlespire Road (APN 037-14009). PLANNING COMMISSION RECOMMENDATION - The Planning Commission voted 5:0 to approve the project. ENVIRONMENTAL DETERMINATION: Exempt: Categorical Exemptions - Class 1, Section 15301; allowed use of an existing structure; Class 5, 15305 (a) - Minor lot line adjustment not creating any new parcels, and Class 17, 15317 - making of Williamson Act Contracts. All interested persons are invited to attend and be heard. Please be advised that if you challenge the above-entitled matter in court, you may be limited to raising only those issues you or someone else raised at the public hearing described in this notice, or in written correspondence delivered at or prior to the public hearing to the Tehama County Clerk of the Board of Supervisors Office, Room 12, County Courthouse, P.O.
