At the Jan. 8 meeting, former Councilman Ross Turner asked the decision be delayed pending notification of local emergency responders to ask for their input. "We have had no comments back from anyone and Corning Volunteer Fire Department Chief Martin Spannaus did not have any issues with the proposed raised crosswalk," City Manager John Brewer said. Notification was sent to the Tehama County Sheriff's Department, St. Elizabeth Community Hospital and Tehama County Volunteer Fire Department, he said. The proposed crosswalk would be from the Palm Village Mobile Home Park, which has a driveway directly across from Maywood Middle School. The city has received several citizen complaints regarding speeding in the area and, while efforts were made to get children to cross elsewhere at crosswalks, children still routinely cross there, Brewer said. The raised crosswalk, which will cost about $2,600, is expected to calm traffic at that location, he said. Installation would not be set to begin until the summer as that area is set to undergo an overlay then and it would not make sense to add the crosswalk before the overlay, Brewer said. There is a Safe Routes to School project to be completed in the Fig Lane area and it is hoped that the city can combine the overlay and crosswalk as alternative bid items for the paving section, he said.
