Richard Hud- son, who has been the U.S. representative for North Carolina's 8th congressio- nal district since 2013. Behind every small busi- ness in North Carolina, there is a story worth hear- ing. It's an entrepreneur who dreams big; a family that works hard – not just for the good of the busi- ness, but also for their employees who have be- come family; a worker who is dedicated to his craft ; a distributor who relies on other small businesses for her own; an engineer who works long hours for her family; or a customer who shops small and supports our local community. All small businesses have something in common: people. Small businesses help make our com- munities thrive. And just as important, our small businesses are one of our economy's biggest assets. As your congressman, I enjoy the time I get to spend at small businesses and manufacturers in our district to hear your stories and your priorities. is week was no exception as I made several stops across our district celebrating Small Busi- ness Week. Since the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act was signed into law, there has been a new wave of optimism for Main Street businesses. In a recent poll, 63 percent of small business- es credited the new tax cuts for improving their outlook. Last week, I visited South- ern Grace Distilleries in Cabarrus County where I heard how they have already invested their savings from our tax cuts to grow their business. I also spoke to several employees while I was there who shared how these tax cuts have already increased take-home pay. e Tax Cuts and Jobs Act is having a tangible, significant impact for folks across the district, and the good news continues to pour in on a daily basis. Another issue a lot of people have ex- pressed concerns over is human traffick- ing. Last week, Congressman Ted Budd and I hosted a roundtable with local law enforcement, faith leaders and nonprofit groups on how we can best confront the scourge of human trafficking. is is not a simple problem, and there is not an easy solution. However, I am encouraged by those who were present that we can all do our part to put an end to this atrocity. Finally, another issue I heard about from many of you last week is one that hits at the very heart of our First Amendment freedoms. Some of you may have heard about Chaplain Scott Squires at Fort Bragg – an investiga- tion was initiated after he excluded himself from leading a retreat that would have violated his religious beliefs. Acting in accordance with both Army regulation and fed- eral law, Chaplain Squires found another chaplain who was able to lead the retreat in his place. None- theless, he is now being accused of discrimination. Once I heard about this case, I immediately con- tacted the Secretary of the Army to demand answers. In the 2013 National De- fense Authorization Act, we made sure that a chaplain adhering to his or her conscience and religious beliefs is pro- tected from adverse action. Rest assured, I am keeping a close watch over this issue and will continue to update you to make sure we are protecting religious liberty in our nation. As you can see, there's a lot going on across the district, and a lot of issues on folks' minds. I am grateful for the oppor- tunity to be your voice in Congress, and I'll continue doing the best job I can on your behalf.
