22 UCW MAY 9-15, 2018 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Hope Mills News & Views Britt cheerleaders hold annual fundraiser by EARL VAUGHAN JR. Cheerleaders may not have all of the special equipment requirements like baseball, softball and football athletes do, but that doesn't mean their sport isn't expensive. To help defray some of those costs, Jack Britt's cheerleaders for the third year will host a different kind of fundraiser, offering spots in the school's student parking lot for sale to people who'd like to come out and unload items from their homes, yard sale style. e third annual Jack Britt Community Yard Sale for the Buccaneer cheerleaders is scheduled Satur- day, May 19, from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. All proceeds from the sale of the parking places go to the Britt cheerleading program. Meanwhile, people who set up and sell their items at the sale get to keep all the money they make and set whatever prices they like for their merchandise. But there are a couple restrictions, said Britt cheerleader coach Ave' Billingslea. "All Cumberland County school rules apply,'' Bill- ingslea said. Obviously that means no illegal items and nothing involving any sort of weapon like guns and knives. All those planning to set up a parking space at the yard sale must bring their own tables and chairs for sitting and displaying purposes. e prices for parking spaces are $25 for a single, $30 for a pair, three for $35 and four spaces for $40. Money for the parking spaces will be collected May 7-10 and again from May 14-17. Billingslea said she will be at the school by 6:30 a.m. the day of the sale and people can begin setting up their parking spaces as early as 6:45 a.m. Billingslea said the hope for this year is to use most of the money raised to purchase new cush- ioned mats for the cheerleaders to practice on. If there is any additional money, it may be used for a number of other items. Billingslea said the typical cheerleading uniform costs about $120. Shoes are another $65-70. "We have used the funds for some girls whose families don't have the money,'' she said. Other things the money can help with include summer cheerleading camp fees, additional practice and event attire, running suits, shorts, T-shirts and cheerleading camp attire. "If we have the money in our account, we can provide them a meal before a game if we're keep- ing them after school,'' Billingslea said. "If there's anything in our account that we're able to use for the girls, we do.''
