The Cool Spring Downtown District and S & S Carriage Rides present "Historic Tours of Olde Fayetteville by Horse and Car- riage" monthly until November. "I have been with the Downtown Alliance for many, many years, and they started the downtown carriage rides," said Hank Parfitt, events committee member of the Down- town Alliance. "Two years ago, we started the historic tours because the carriage rides were such a tremendous success; this was right around the time the Cool Spring Downtown District was forming." The tour features historic sites of Fayetteville's 250-year his- tory and the stories of people and events connected with them. "The fun part of being the tour guide is to see how surprised people are that have lived in Fayetteville perhaps their whole life – they learn things about Fayetteville they never knew, and (they) have no idea that our history goes back to the 1700s," said Parfitt. "I also think it is a great thing to bring out historical figures of people of color and how impor- tant they were in this city's history – such as E. E. Smith and Charles Chesnutt." Parfitt added that in July, in conjunction with African World Peace Day, they hope to get special permission from the city's historian to give a tour inside the E. E. Smith house on Gillespie Street, which is being renovated. The horse-drawn carriage ride adds a bit of fun to the historic tours. "The owners of the horse and carriage are very protective of the horses during the historic tours," said Parfitt. "We give a 45-minute tour, and then the horse gets a 15-minute break every hour." Parfitt added that he has to be very cognizant of the temperature and humidity, so the tours are done in the mornings of the hot months, which are July, August and September. Tour dates include May 19 from 2- 6 p.m., June 9 from 2-6 p.m., July 14 from 9 a.m.-noon, August 11 from 9 a.m.- noon, Sept. 8 from 9 a.m.–noon, Oct. 13 from 2-6 p.m. and Nov. 10 from 2-6 p.m. The rides depart from 222 Hay St. "We encourage people to buy their tickets in advance because over half of the people that ride are from out of state," said Parfitt. "We look forward to everyone coming out to enjoy our historic tours." Tickets cost $25 per person, $20 with military ID and $15 for children under 12.
