MAY 9-15, 2018 UCW 27 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Wait, what? In Dorking, England, Chris Hepworth and his partner, Tanisha Prince, both of London, dove across the finish line in 1 minute and 37 seconds, setting a course record and capturing the coveted U.K. Wife Carrying championship on April 8. Any adult couple can compete in the contest – married or not and regardless of gender – which consists of one team member carrying the other, most us- ing the "Estonian carry," with the "wife" upside-down, her legs over her partner's shoulders and gripping him around the waist from behind. About 40 pairs com- peted over the quarter-mile course strewn with hay bales and mud, Reuters report- ed. Hepworth and Prince plan to move on to the world finals in Finland. "I think a Finnish guy wins it every year," Hepworth noted, "so it'll be good to go there and take them down." [Reuters, 4/9/2018] Ewwwww! [WTVD, 4/13/2018] My weird obsession You may have read that the company that makes Necco Wafers announced in March it would have to shut down in May unless a buyer was found. Since then, crazed Necco fans have been stockpiling candy. "Necco Wafers are up 150 percent," Candystore.com reported in a blog post. "A clear signal of panic- buying." Katie Samuels, 23, of Florida tried to strike a deal with Candystore, a wholesaler. "I offered to trade my 2003 Honda Accord for all of their stock," Samuels told e Boston Globe. "I don't have much right now, so I was like, 'I've got this car, and I want all that candy,' so maybe they would consider it." Candys- tore didn't accept her offer, but Samuels did buy 48 rolls of candy using her credit card. [e Boston Globe, 4/10/2018] Our weird addiction Officials in the city of Vordingborg, Denmark, planned the demolition of a 174-foot-tall silo months ahead of the event, but as onlookers cheered the explosion on April 6, the tower toppled in the wrong direction, landing on a waterfront library and music school. No injuries were reported, according to e Guardian, and the library interior, while covered with dust, sustained no serious damage. Question: What is your opinion on NBC's "Good Girls?" I've watched the first five episodes and I'm still on the fence. e three leading ladies have zero in common, with the exception of needing money desperately. Suburban moms working for criminals to earn cash for a sick child's medical expenses, legal bills in a child custody case and saving a home from foreclosure be- cause an inept cheating husband got them deep in debt. Now said husband is faking cancer. Each episode the girls say they are getting out only to double down on the illegal activities. Do you think this show has a future? – Dawn Matt Roush: My opinion hasn't re- ally changed since I first reviewed the show, which wrapped its first season April 30, in that I have is- sues with "Good Girls'" uncertain tone between broad suburban satire and actual crime drama. Love the primary cast, but it often feels to me more like a show that's Breaking Silly, and even when the stakes are high (like with Ruby's daughter's health crisis), I rarely feel the urgency or the comedy. I've fallen behind a bit, and if it's not renewed, I probably won't bother to catch up. The series was pretty heavily promoted during the Olympics, and hasn't capitalized on its "Voice" lead-in, so I'd say the chances for it to get a second sea- son to figure itself out are pretty iffy. These days, you just never know. Jeers to Amazon for streaming us along. If their John Krasinski-fronted espionage series "Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan" is so good that they've already renewed it for a second season, how come we have to wait until late Au- gust to spy the first episode of the damn thing?!
