The Chan- ticleers were in the FBS playoffs by 2006 and made five other postseason appearances in 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 along with winning seven Southern Conference champi- onships. This season Coastal Carolina is mak- ing its debut as an Football Bowl Subdivision team as a new member of the Sun Belt Con- ference. The Chanticleers can't play in a bowl game until 2018 because of NCAA transition rules regarding moving up in classification, but they are eligible to win the Sun Belt champi- onship. Not that anyone believes that's going to happen. … Coastal Carolina was picked to finish 12th in the Sun Belt in a preseason poll. A big issue for the Chanticleers in moving up to the FBS level is a lack of size considering their projected starting defensive line aver- ages about 250 pounds. … Coastal Carolina will have a quarterback with FBS experience in fifth-year senior Austin Wilson, a graduate transfer who was a backup at Syracuse.
