For the ninth year in a row, Cleveland Coun- ty's Social Worker for the Blind, Lucy Plyler, took fi ve Visually Impaired Persons (VIPs) to the North Carolina Outer Banks for the An- nual North Carolina Lions VIP Fishing Tour- nament. The group from Cleveland County had a great day of fi shing off Nags Head Pier last week. One member of the group, Rodney Turner of Shelby, won 1st Place with a total of 268 points representing the Nags Head Fish- ing Pier. There were about 500 fi sh caught off Nags Head Fishing Pier and Rodney caught just over 100 of them. This isn't the fi rst time Rodney has brought home a trophy from the VIP Fishing Tournament. This is the 5th year in a row that he brings home bragging rights. When asked how he manages to pick the per- fect spot, he said, "I just told my guide dog, Boyko to pick out a good place on the pier." Rodney was about halfway up the pier on the north side. Rodney will be eligible to fi sh in the National Tournament next year. On the day of the tournament, four piers and two head boats are open to about almost 500 visually impaired persons (VIPs) from across the state. Only fi sh caught on the participant's line and reeled in by the participant during the established time limit can be counted toward participant's total points in the tournament. Volunteers are only permitted to bait hooks and cast the line into the ocean. The points are based on types of fi sh caught using only blood worms. The annual event is sponsored by the First Flight, Nags Head, Manteo, Wanchese, Co- lumbia, Currituck, Lower Currituck and Plym- outh Lions Clubs and attracts over 500 blind and visually impaired individuals and over 300 volunteers from all over North Carolina, Connecticut, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Utah, and Georgia to the Outer Banks each October. The North Carolina Lions VIP Fishing Tour- nament is a non-profi t organization celebrat- ing its 34th Anniversary this year. The project brings in participants for three days of rec- reation, fellowship, and independent living workshops designed to help visually impaired persons (VIPs). It is the largest gathering of visually impaired in North Carolina and is believed to be the largest event of its kind in North America. The VIP program touches the lives of a small percentage of those persons who are attempting to conform to a world of the sighted. Tournament offi cials recognize the need to build support and a fi nancial base for the project. In-kind services secured local- ly and statewide help offset the annual costs. Fund-raisers, such as the adopt-a-fi sh- erman program, contributions and smaller projects cover expenses of the annual event that can exceed $260,000. Participants are housed in local hotels, have six meals, go fi shing on two head boats and four ocean fi sh- ing piers for a day of recreation, participate in seminars and independent living training, and visit with vendors. The closing awards banquet on Wednesday offers motivation and awards. The project has grown from a local tournament serving 12 blind children in 1982 to the almost 500 participants in 2016. The numbers were down this year due to many who were affected by Hurricane Matthew. Many thanks go to Central United Meth- odist Church in Kings Mountain who helped make it possible for the group from Cleve- land County to go on this trip by providing their church activity bus as well as the cost for fuel. The church partnered with the group about fi ve years ago and has made it a part of their outreach ministry. Thanks also to church member, Richard Anderson who drove many hours and miles, and made it a fun trip for the group. For more information about the Division of Services for the Blind, contact Lucy Plyler, Social Worker for the Blind at: 704-484-4872.
