BURNS (8-2 overall / 5-2 in conference play) CREST (8-2 overall / 6-1 conference play) The long time series between these two county schools, both of whom are celebrating their 50th anniversaries, went to the Chargers last Friday 24-14. In a very physical game, a tough break came early for Burns when leading Rusher Aaron Hill was lost for the game with an injured ankle. He was replaced by Magale Burris. Burns led early, after Quarterback Cameron Barbee handed off to B.J. Hopper for a six yard touchdown run. Crest Quarterback, Cameron Peeler, was pressured in the fi rst half and sacked a couple of times by Burns' Stormy Mosteller and Raheem Epps. The contest was tied "7 all" late in the 1st quarter, which was the score at halftime. Crest took the lead for the fi rst time in the 3rd quarter, when Cameron Peeler completed a 39 yard pass to top Receiver Tyshun Odom. It was then 14 to 7. The Bulldogs, B.J. Hopper responded with a punt return for a touchdown with just over fi ve minutes to go in the 3rd quarter, making it 14-14. Still tied entering the last quarter, Crest regained the lead and never looked back after Receiver Ty Hosch caught a 32 yard pass from Peeler making the score 21-14 with under 8 minutes to go. Burns would have a couple more chances on offense but the Chargers' defense held strong, forcing them to three and out on each possession. Justin Foster was a beast on defense for Crest with 14 tackles. From that point, Crest took time off the clock by picking up fi rst downs and made their way back into the Bulldogs' red-zone to set up a 35 yard fi eld goal by Evan Davis. This extended the Chargers' lead to the fi nal score of 24-14. Both teams now have important fi nal games of the regular season this week, which will have implications on playoff positioning. Look for details on Crest-Shelby further down this page. Burns travels to R-S Central. The Bulldogs fell to R-S 28-19 last season under one year Coach Rob Senseney. However, they showed a lot of heart in that game. Down 21-0 half way through the 3rd quarter, Burns would score 19 points in a row to make it close. Raheem Epps had a 36 yard touchdown reception and Teriq James had a rushing score during the Burns' comeback. However, R-S added another seven points and held on for the victory. If they can win this time, Burns still has a chance at the SMAC 3A top seed for the playoffs. Crest and Kings Mountain are the other two teams that also have a chance at the 3A conference title. The focus is now on fellow SMAC (South Mountain Athletic Conference) member East Burke during what will be Senior Night and the fi nal regular season game of the season. In their 2015 meeting, it was complete domination by the Mountaineers in a 34-0 shutout at East Burke. In that game, Quarterback Darren Burns threw three touchdown passes, including one to Receiver Kavin Mosely of 80 yards. The Kings Mountain offensive line was credited by coaches for a strong performance and a key to the win. This game also marked the eighth straight quarter that Kings Mountain's defense allowed no points by their opponent. If the Mountaineers' win on Friday, they could either win outright or tie with either Burns or Crest, or both teams for a chance at the outright 3A title in the SMAC. It was 28-0 at halftime. The Golden Lions had 418 total yards of offense. Shelby only gained 109 yards of that offense on the ground off just eight rushes. That's because their passing game was on the money, as they went 14 of 19 for 309 yards, a 74% completion percentage. Thirteen of the fourteen completed passes were thrown by starting Shelby Quarterback Malik Sarratt, who contributed to four touchdowns. Running Back Juwan Sims had 41 yards on just three carries for a rushing touchdown, but also had a pass reception for a score from Malik Sarratt. Speaking of Receivers, Shelby's Isiah Etchinson caught fi ve passes for 95 yards and two touchdowns – while Jayden Borders had four receptions for 111 yards and a touchdown. The Golden Lions' defense held Draughn to only 41 yards of total offense and forced two fumbles. Regardless of what happens in their next game against Crest, Shelby once again has taken the 2A title in SMAC play. THIS WEEK SHELBY VS.
