National Immunization Month is a reminder that we all need vaccines throughout our lives A healthy start: Pregnancy and vaccines D u r i n g p r e g n a n c y, you are of- ten thinking about baby names, nursery colors, and prenatal vitamins, but you should also be think- ing about vaccines. Vaccines during pregnancy not only protect you against diseas- es, but you can also begin to pass some protection to your baby that will last the fi rst few months of life. The two vaccines that are routine- ly recommended by doctors and midwives during your pregnancy are the pertussis or whooping cough vaccine (Tdap) and the fl u shot. To celebrate the impor- tance of immunizations for a healthy start and throughout our lives – and to make sure everyone is protected with all the vaccines they need – the Cleveland County Public Health Center is joining with partners nationwide in rec- ognizing August as National Immunization Awareness Month. Getting a fl u shot is the best way to protect a preg- nant woman from the fl u and prevent serious fl u-related problems, such as premature labor and delivery. And when you get a whooping vaccine, or Tdap, during each preg- nancy, you'll pass some an- tibodies that will help protect your baby for the fi rst months of life. That's when babies are most vulnerable to the dev- astating complications asso- ciated with whooping cough. Pregnant women should talk to their ob-gyns or midwives about these important vac- cines. You can fi nd out more about the vaccines recom- mended during pregnancy at www.cdc.gov/vaccines or by talking to your doctor or mid- wife, or by calling the Cleve- land County Public Health Center Immunization Clinic at 980-484-5001.
