I even understand why. But don't you get bored hearing how wonderful the new Star Trek movie is? Luckily for you I was in an atrocious mood when I saw the 13th film in the franchise and I'm in an even worse mood now. Let's start with the fact that Simon Pegg completed the script via Mad Libs. The crew of the Starship Enterprise battles (Insert villain who's sort of like Hitler) on the planet (pick five letters from a Scrabble bag). There, they meet a new ally (Some Alien Babe) and realize the greatest challenge is (insert moral conflict). In a stunning conclusion (everything returns to exactly how it started). Three years into their five-year mission, that terrible Wrath of Khan remake nonsense Into Darkness behind them, the USS Enterprise docks at Starbase Yorktown so the crew can resupply. Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) is questioning his purpose in life, Commander Spock is breaking up with Lieutenant Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the world is weeping because Leonard Nimoy is dead, which means Ambassador Spock won't appear in this film. With everyone's character arc carefully spelled out for the audience, the Enterprise is sent on a rescue mission into an uncharted nebula. The rescue becomes an ambush, in a pretty cool sequence that involves a literal swarm of ships tearing apart the ship, and spreading her crew to the four winds. The swarm's commander, Krall (Idris Elba) boards the debris to search for a relic that might as well be called Plot Device. Kirk has the Plot Device and the alien commander wants it, but this is Star Trek, so good will triumph. My one sentence plot summary just saved you more than two hours. You're welcome. As the wreckage succumbs to gravity, escape pods shoot off the ship like popcorn. Kirk and Chekov (Rest in Peace, Anton Yelchin) stumble around the remnants of the saucer section to save the plot device from the bad guys. Leonard "Bones" McCoy (Karl Urban) and a wounded Spock bond with their usual Odd Couple-inspired banter. Meanwhile, Scotty (Simon Pegg) has adventures with the standard issue New Alien Babe, Jaylah (Sofia Boutella). Hmm, there's someone I'm forgetting about … who could it be … oh, right. In a shocking twist, Uhura, the only female officer, is captured by the bad guys. Sulu (John Cho) is captured, too, but since there are plenty of other dudes doing interesting action-y things to advance the plot, it doesn't irritate me nearly as much. Especially when Uhura's secondary contribution to the plot is breaking up with Spock. Ahem. Simon Pegg, maybe check in with some women before you write the next Star Trek film, how 'bout it? Overall, this was a fun science fiction action film, worlds better than Into Darkness, and with fewer glaring plot holes. If I had been in a better mood, maybe I would have enjoyed it.
