AUGUST 10-16, 2016 UCW 19 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM A Fast Track to a New Job by KATRINA SIMPSON Fayetteville Technical Community College's Central Sterile Processing program of study is a one-semester program offered each fall semester. One of the unique characteristics of the program is that it can be completed in one semester or 16 weeks. The course is offered once a year and accepts 10 students each year. The first eight weeks of the program are offered Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings from 5-6:50 p.m. and Mondays and Wednesdays from 5-8:50 p.m. (lecture and lab). The course provides instruction to students on critical skills needed in order to clean, decontaminate, package and process surgical equipment and devices used on patients in hospitals, surgery centers, dental clinics and other medical facilities. Students in the program are given the opportunity to apply the skills they learned from the first eight weeks of the program in a practical environment during the second eight weeks of the course. After successfully completing the first eight weeks with a grade of "B" or better, future technicians complete a total of 18 hours of clinical experience at various hospitals and clinics located in Cumberland County and surrounding areas. Upon successful completion of all courses required for a certificate in Central Sterile Processing, students are eligible to take the national certification exam for Central Sterile Processing Professionals offered through the Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution.
