14 JULY 6-12, 2016 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM EVENTS Cape Fear Studios Opens New Exhibit by ERINN CRIDER This year marks Cape Fear Studios' 8th Annual National 2D Competi- tion. Artists from all over the nation submitted their works. This year, the exhibit includes works by art- ists from North Carolina, New York, Louisiana and Florida. The only guidelines are that the medium must be 2-D. Even with that stipulation, the exhibit has a variety of pieces. Out of 62 images submitted this year the juror, Dan Beck, selected 40 to display in the main gallery, explained Rose Kennedy the chair of the Retail Committee at Cape Fear Studios. The show hangs through July 19 at Cape Fear Studios. The Studio is located at 148 Maxell St. In addition to selecting the pieces to display in the exhibit, Beck also chose winners in several categories: Best of Show, First Place, Second Place and two Honorable Mentions. He makes this decision based on years of experience creating 2D artwork himself. Beck was the Gold Medal winner of the 2011 Oil Paint- ers of America National Exhibition. His other awards include six awards of excellence with Oil Painters of America (three national and three regional). He has also won two consecutive Raymar Art Competi- tion Awards of Excellence, Award of Excellence with Salon International, a first place, a second place and eight nationalists with Boldbrush Art competition. Beck has had feature articles in American Art Collector, Southwest Art, American Artist, Art of the West magazines and Art Talk. His paintings graced the cov- ers of November 2008 Southwest Art and September 2011 Art of the West. Beck attends many nationally prominent shows such as "Ameri- can Art Invitational," "American Art in Miniature" and "Great American Figurative Show," said Kennedy, "His paintings have found collectors in both the private and corporate world on a national level as well as from such diverse places as Canada, Japan and the Middle East. He is in the permanent collection of the Littleton Historical Museum and has exhibited with the Phippen Museum in Prescott, Arizona. For more about Beck, and to see his work, visit: www. danbeck neart.com." One of the most impressive aspects of this annual exhibit is the how many things 2D can mean. At first this criteria may seem limiting, but the creativity of the artists proves that a canvas can be made into any- thing. "There are many mediums rep- resented in the exhibit, including drawing, oil painting, pastel, water- color, acrylic and mixed media. Each medium is unique in application and effect. The high skill level of these artists in their individual mediums makes it difficult to choose a favor- ite!" Kennedy says. Cape Fear Studios usually displays works of art of various mediums throughout the year. The national 2D exhibit is a unique opportunity for the community. "This show is exclusively 2D art and presents a wonderful opportu- nity to see and study many different styles of work created by so many top-notch artists from across the United States. We have very talented artists at CFS in multiple mediums, but it's always inspiring to see what other artists are creating," Kennedy says.
