TheLordgavemea word for the nation on a 2009 visit to the Alamo. He resur- rected this word on my recent visit to the capi- tols of seven Midwest- ern states when lead- ers asked if I had a prophetic word for them. The Alamo word came at once to mind. It was my only day off and I asked to visit the Al- amo. When we arrived the Lord spoke clearly — He does that — saying I was here to pray fulfillment of His original purposes in this fortress that fought off a Mexican army more than twenty times the size of its garrison for thirteen days before inspiring the Texas Revolution to vic- tory weeks later. He said I could pray without know- ing purposes He would re- veal when He was ready. This is an important reality to embrace — as Christians and as Amer- icans. It is not all about what we know and what we know how to do. We can place our faith in the ability of God to speak rather than in our ability to hear and interpret and so forth. If He has some- thing we need to know He is quite capable of com- municating it. But we can also trust Him and pray His will be done be- fore outside knowing. If we choose to obey Him in- stead of insisting He ad- just to our thinking. He did reveal His pur- poses — all three — af- ter I prayed their fulfill- ment in the Alamo court- yard that day. On the flight home He pointed out the Alamo garrison was a dra- matic expression of ethnic diversity in a time of much more serious racial ten- sion. Yet in the crucible of thirteen days of bombard- ment, assault, and even- tual massacre the men (and women) of the Alamo became one people. He revealed His second purpose some days later. The garrison is shown by letters home to have been virtually all people of Christian faith — remem- ber this occurs in the mid- dle of the Second Great Awakening — but of ev- ery known denomination. The co-commanders were a Baptist and a Catho- lic. Again recall if we have sectarian suspicions to- day the hostility was much greater in 1836. Yet in that thirteen-day crucible the garrison became of one faith in Christ. His third purpose — re- vealed in my third week back — is perhaps the most important, for it re- quires willing human par- ticipation to start the ball rolling. On the ninth day of the siege a group of thirty-two men rode in from the town of Gonza- les. By this time the over- whelming number of Mex- ican troops spoke for it- self; yet this cavalry troop rode toward the dan- ger — to support and de- fend their neighbors at all costs — and this is His third purpose. It is not for the Alamo alone, but for this nation founded on His Word, that we must learn to ride toward danger and not away from it. That is where we will find our Lord and our God waiting for us. The Lord summed up His own prophetic mes- sage by saying He has dropped America into our present crucible for these very purposes of His. He is determined we will at last become one people under God. He is committed our finding ourselves to be on faith in Christ — not in the details of style and distinc- tive — but in our loyalty to one another as fellow believers of one Messiah. And He is determined to demonstrate to us that — when we are with Him — the closer we are to danger the further we are from harm. This last cannot be demonstrated until and unless we ride toward the danger instead of away from it. That means no more reliance on the fatu- ous protection of a politi- cally correct/corrupt judi- ciary. No more hiding be- hind either constitutional rights that can be tram- pled or a phony spiritual- ity that does not sully its hands with real people and a real world. No more being "above all that," and — just as much — no more contenting ourselves with a "Hell no we won't go," at- titude either. Moses ac- cepted the vision God gave Him and led his peo- ple through the Red Sea to freedom — never knowing if the waters would part until they did — and Je- sus led His disciples to the Cross and beyond. What we need in Cal- ifornia and the United States are people commit- ted to old fashioned repen- tance — re-focus on God in Christ — and concerted action based on what we see when we take that look. Only Christians are commanded, although ev- eryone is welcome to come along, and the blessing of abundant life is guaran- teed for all who do.
