ADAMHUNGER—THEASSOCIATEDPRESS Jordan Spieth hits out of a sand trap onto the fi h green during the second round of play at The Barclays tournament Friday. TheAssociatedPress EDISON,N.J. JordanSpiethlostout on a chance to play the weekend at The Barclays. He also lost his No. 1 ranking. Bubba Watson, momentarily dis- tracted by a rare warning for tak- ing too long to play a shot, recov- ered with a birdie on the 18th hole at Plainfield Country Club for a 2-un- der 68 and a one-shot lead going into the weekend at the opening Fe- dEx Cup playoff event. On an otherwise sleepy afternoon at a course where no one could get some separation, two peculiar mo- ments stood out — a bad time for Watson, bad golf from Spieth. Trying to rally to make the cut, Spieth hit into a hazard on the 12th hole, and a bogey later became a double bogey when he was penal- ized one shot for stepping on his ball during the search. He had a 73, the first time since the Tour Champion- ship last year that he had consecu- tive rounds over par. He missed the cut by five shots. That means Rory McIlroy, who isn't playing this week, returns to No. 1. "I'vereachedthatpeakalreadyand I know it's going to be close enough to where if I just get the job done next week, I'll be back in that ranking," Spieth said. "But again, that ranking, it's great once you reach it but it's not somethingthatI'mgoingtoliveordie on each week." McIlroy becomes the 14th player since the world ranking began in 1986 to get to No. 1 without play- ing that week. Watson is in good shape through 36 holes to claim his own No. 1 rank- ing — a victory would move him to the top of the FedEx Cup. Much like the world ranking right now, that figures to change by the week. Ultimately, what matters to Wat- son, Spieth and others is winning the Tour Championship to capture the $10 million bonus. Halfway through this event, no telling what else will happen over the next two days. The race to be Latavius Mur- ray's backup remains wide open heading into the third exhibition game Sunday against Arizona, with no one able to seize the job either because of injuries or inef- fectiveness. Trent Richardson and Roy Helu Jr. were signed in the offseason to fill that role. But Richardson is av- eraging just 2.3 yards per carry and lacks the burst that made him the third overall pick in the 2012 draft. Helu finally returned to practice this week after miss- ing more than three weeks with an injury. That has helped open the door for undrafted free agent Michael Dyer to make his case for the job. NFL Raiders seeking to identify backup RB By Jenna Fryer The Associated Press SONOMA The hardest part of the week for Sage Karam is at night, when he's alone with his thoughts and tries to process Justin Wil- son's death. The 20-year-old IndyCar driver said Friday he has received coun- seling this week from a psycholo- gist to deal with the emotions he's felt since his single-car crash at Pocono Raceway set in motion the fluke accident that killed Wilson. Wilson was struck in the head by a piece of debris from Karam's car that had bounced along the Pocono Raceway surface. The nosecone struck Wilson in the head, and he died Monday, a day later. The psychologist encour- aged Karam to get out of the house and stay busy. The nights have been a struggle. "For me, right now, the night- time is the worst, when you are sit- ting there thinking about things," Karam said. "I've just been trying to not be spending a lot of alone INDYCAR Karam tries to process Wilson's death 49ers GM Trent Baalke is con- vinced the team can withstand this year's constant succession of personnel blows, the latest being outside linebacker Ah- mad Brooks' leave of absence amid a sexual-battery charge. First game score was 25-11, Cardinals. The second game was 25-21, Cardinals. The third, 25-14, fourth, 28-26 and fifth games, 15-9, all went to the Bulldogs. In the second game of the match the Bulldogs started to catch up with the Cardinals, who started strong. Los Mo- linos nearly tied at 22-21 but the Cardinals pushed forward to get the win. After the second game it was all Bulldogs, with sopho- more Rachel Rodgers and se- nior Vanesa Cota having the most assists of the match. Rodgers also had the most kills with 20 and had the top hit percentage with .286. "We had a very slow start and then we persevered," said Bulldogs head coach Chas Ko- nopka. "We are a young team, experience wise, this year and we only have four girls from last year that played. I think we have a really good center, that could distribute and we have two really good outsides that are only going to get bet- ter." Liset Castillo, one of the outside hitters Konopka spoke about, comes from a long line of volleyball players who have played for him. Castillo fol- lows Rodgers with 18 kills in the game. "We were a little behind in the beginning but we brought it back at the end," said Cota, captain of the team and a vol- leyball player since the sixth grade. "We just played really well. We try to go to Rachel or Liset because they are re- ally good hitters." The scores stayed close and the lead went back and forth between the teams throughout most of the match. "The game was very ex- citing," said Cardinals head coach Mike Albee. "We had to adjust a lot. We played our hearts out." Albee spoke with his team and gave them some words of wisdom to move forward and learn from this match. "I told my team 'keep your head up. This is not going to be the last time we have to battle like this to win.' To- wards the end, you know, we just got exhausted. This is the first match of the season for us and we went five games. So fatigue set in. Those are the things that hampered us there." Confidence is something Al- bee said he will be working on with the girls in the upcoming practices. "When things don't go their way, when they make errors, they have to overcome that and come back strong on the next point," Albee said. The Bulldogs' next match is on Tuesday at home against Las Plumas at 6:30 p.m. The Cardinals' next match is on Tuesday in Redding against University Prep at 6:30 p.m. HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL BULLDOGS RALLY TO BEAT CARDS 3-2 Los Molinos takes the win in season opener PHOTO COURTESY OF LARRY LONG Rachel Rogers with a kill shot Thursday night in the Los Molinos win over Corning in 5.
