VSO NEWS Corning appointments coming this fall Staff reports Thanks to Tehama County Public Health and many area organizations and volunteers, students at Los Molinos Elementary School enjoyed the farmers market experience recently without even leaving cam- pus. Tehama County Public Health and the North State Food Bank delivered almost 4,000 pounds of fresh pro- duce to the market, accord- ing to Alyson Wylie, Red Bluff resident and a pro- gram manager at the Center for Healthy Communities (CHC) at Chico State. Stu- dents "shopped" the mar- ket and participated in fun events as part of this unique on-campus nutrition educa- tion program. Students didn't just en- joy the market. They also worked to make it happen— a key component of this youth engagement project. Future Farmers of Amer- ica (FFA) students from Los Molinos High School helped set up booths and distribute the fresh fruit and vegeta- bles. Representatives from the University of California CalFresh program brought their ever popular blender bike to entertain the kids by using use pedal-power to mix healthy smoothies. Some 20 CHC staff mem- bers, many of them Chico State students, were also on hand. Los Molinos Elementary School food service staff prepared a special walnut- based trail mix for the mar- ket shoppers, and Katie Bi- anchi Zane from Bianchi Orchards helped distribute fresh walnut samples. About 350 students shopped the fresh fruit and vegetable stands using school market bucks. Most students went home with at least 10 pounds of produce, and packed their selections into reusable shopping bags provided by The Home De- pot. Take-home recipes and nutrition and health infor- mation were provided to students and their families. Wylie says the goal is to show kids in a hands-on, real world way that fresh, available and locally grown foods are easy to prepare as tasty meals and snacks. In addition to delivering nutri- tion and health knowledge, experiential education pro- grams promote essential math and life skills.
