Ontheair By Cam Inman BayAreaNewsGroup DENVER As chief ar- chitect of the 49ers ros- ter, Trent Baalke is con- vinced it can withstand this year's constant suc- cession of personnel blows, the latest being outside linebacker Ah- mad Brooks' leave of ab- sence amid a sexual-bat- tery charge. Saturday's exhibition against the Denver Bron- cos will test Baalke's the- ory that all is well with the embattled 49ers. "This is a resilient group," Baalke said this week. "They're going to stay focused. They're go- ing to stay committed to one another and this team and this organization. "I expect them to move forward, no different than any other situation we've come up against." There have been so many situations all year long: surprise retire- ments, free agent depar- tures, a couple arrests, a league-imposed suspen- sion and a reconfigured coaching staff. With this third exhibi- tion, the 49ers will give their projected starters their longest action of the preseason, and perhaps it provide the best getaway possible for those players caught amid a chaotic off- season. "Coach (Jim) Tomsula has done an excellent job of messaging this foot- ball team, and they're ex- cited," Baalke said. Left tackle Joe Staley said Tomsula isn't alone in keeping morale up, as assistant coaches and players are reminding ev- eryone to simply do their own job. "Just focus on what we're here for, and that's to play football," Staley said. "We're here to get ready for Week 1 and the Minnesota Vikings at Levi's Stadium." NFL 49ers' resolve will be tested by Manning, Broncos shrugged when asked if he was happy with his score. He was seven shots back. "This is a course where if you make the cut, you have a chance to win," Thomas said. Watson was at 7-under 133. British Open cham- pion Zach Johnson made five birdies to go with four par-saving putts from out- side 8 feet for a 65. He was one shot out of the lead, along with Henrik Sten- son (66), Tony Finau (69) and Jason Dufner (68). YOKOHAMA TIRE LPGA CLASSIC Yani Tseng closed with an eagle and a birdie for an 8-under 64 and a one-stroke lead in the Yokohama Tire LPGA Classic. Tseng hit a 6-iron to 4 feet to set up the eagle on the par-5 eighth hole just before play was de- layed for about 90 min- utes because of light- ning and rain, then took the outright lead on the par-4 ninth with her sixth birdie of the day. DICK'S SPORTING GOODS OPEN Paul Goydos and Gene Sauers shared the first-round lead at 6-un- der 66 in the Champions Tour's Dick's Sporting Goods Open. Goydos had a bogey- free round at En-Joie. He won the Allianz Cham- pionship in February in Florida for his second vic- tory on the 50-and-over tour. Sauers had seven birdies and a bogey. John Huston, the 2011, winner was a stroke back along with Ian Woosnam. Defending champion Bernhard Langer had a 71. Golf FROM PAGE 1 time because that's when I start thinking things. "It's one of the toughest things, even though it was a freak thing. But at night, when you are sitting there in bed, you think of things and you are looking up at the ceiling thinking, 'What if? What if I didn't spin?' and that's the toughest thing." Karam waffled with whether or not he should attend this weekend's Indy- Car season finale at Sonoma Raceway, but decided being at the track and receiving support from the paddock would be the best thing for him. He was never sched- uled to race Sunday for Chip Ganassi Racing. He was able to speak to Wilson's brother, Stefan, who is also a driver, on Sun- day night because Karam and Wilson were taken to the same Pennsylvania hospital after the accident. Karam had his right heel and left wrist evaluated, but was released without any broken bones. Karam has yet to speak to Wilson's wife, Julia, but listed it as a priority. A text exchange with Stefan Wilson on Thursday also boosted his spirits. "Out of all the people who can pick me up, his family is probably going to be the most influential peo- ple," Karam said. "(Stefan) has been there for me, and I've been there for him, and we've just been trying to help each other out." Karam was accompanied at the track Friday by his fa- ther, Jody, who aches for his son. The youngest driver in the IndyCar Series, Karam had not previously been ex- posed to this tragic side of racing. While many veterans have developed a hardness for it, Karam called this in- cident the toughest thing he's ever dealt with. "Physically he's fine, we worked out this week. Mentally, it's tough," Jody Karam said. "Imagine be- ing 20, even though he wasn't the reason, he feels like he was. And that's hor- rible." IndyCar FROM PAGE 1 After struggling in the pre- season opener, Dyer ran for 45 yards on 12 carries last week in Minnesota. "I feel like I got my confi- dence up because I was able to get into a rhythm and up to game speed," Dyer said. "Going from the first game to second game you try to build confidence and get the offense down. By the third game you should be able to have control of the game and play hard and fast." It's been quite a road for Dyer, a freshman star at Au- burn who helped the Tigers win the2010nationalcham- pionship game by rushing for 143 yards in the title game against Oregon. Dyer had a pair of 1,000- yard seasons at Auburn be- fore being suspended for the bowl game his sopho- more year and then trans- ferring to Arkansas State. He got dismissed from the team before ever playing at Arkansas State. Dyer earned his associate degree at Arkansas Baptist College before playing his fi- nal two years at Louisville, where he rushed for 704 yards in 17 games. Dyer was not drafted and didn't earn an NFL contract until af- ter impressing the Raiders enough on a tryout at rookie minicamp in May. "He runs hard and is very determined," coach Jack Del Rio said. "He has a little juice to him. He is showing up, making people miss and accelerating through some tackles and doing a pretty good job. He has come an awful long way from when he first came in here in the spring as a late addition." Richardson had a much easier entrance into the NFL after starring at Ala- bama, but is with his third teaminfouryearsandcould be running out of time af- ter already being traded by Cleveland and cut by Indi- anapolis. Richardson has gotten most of the second-team work so far. He is far from assured of staying in that role once the season begins. "He's got to earn it," Del Rio said. "He's got to be good enough as a backup."
