Page 20 My Garden Angels By Joanne Winer Since moving to Quartzsite 21 years ago, we have met some of the most wonderful people of all kinds, from residents, winter visitors and snowbirds alike. Being in business here has made us aware of how many people come into your life and touch it in some way or an- other. This is especially true when you lose a loved one--you find out how much your family and friends mean to you. We sure found out what a wonderful place this was when we suffered the loss of our daughter Celia, and are so grateful for all the people who have made our lives richer for knowing them since then. For the past several years, a family has come here for the winter and stays in the same campground as we live in, in fact, they are just across the road from us a little ways. We met them several times, but never really got to know them well until this year. When they came back this winter, we talked about the Gardens, and I told them I wanted to do one of the craft sales to help raise some money, and was going to make candles like I used to make years ago (turned out it was over 27 years ago). The two girls, Morgan (8 at the time), and her sister Marina (10) offered to help me make them since they love doing crafts. So we made plans and bought everything we needed. I have been wanting to do this for several years now, but never found the time or energy to get it together, since I'm so busy with everything else. I couldn't decide whether to still do the candles, and when I mentioned it to Stephanie, their mother, and told her I really want- ed to do the float too, they all offered to help get them both done. Greg Mulac, the father, agreed to pull the float in the parade for me since I had to help with the judges. The girls and Stephanie came down to the bookstore and we worked all day on getting the float ready. I had wanted to take one of Celia's Christmas drawings and bring it to life- -she did one picture that we made into cards that showed a tree with all kinds of animals surrounding it--we changed it a bit to a desert setting, and made a huge sa- guaro out of fencing, putting Celia's angel on top. Paul drew bighorn sheep, coyotes, quail and rabbits, and we spent hours cut- ting them out and painting them for the float, then putting it all together the day of the parade. It looked great. Then, the girls came over to the house one day and we made candles all day, taking them to the craft sale that weekend--they didn't all sell January 4, 2012 but we had fun, and we ended up donat- ing the rest of them to Isaiah 58 for their Christmas dinner. We decided to get together between Christmas and New Years for a family dinner at my house--the girls and their mother came over and helped with the dinner, and it was so much fun- -Morgan wanted to bake something and I had such a great time with her do- ing it. Reminded me so much of doing the same with Celia. After dinner we sat around and talked, and told some stories of our experiences. Morgan laughed so hard at one of the incidents that we all just couldn't stop laughing--if felt so good to hear a child's laughter in the house again. She particularly brought back so many memories for us. Both these kids are so smart and just so wonderful to be around, as are their parents--we feel blessed to have gotten to know them. It really made what has been a hurtful time of the year for us something that was filled with laughter and joy--we may even put up a tree next year!! Thanks to the Mulacs-Stephanie, Greg, Morgan and Marina for being such good friends and helping us get our Christmas spirit back again after so many years!! These are truly my Gardens angels!!!
