First came news from American political royalty. Chelsea Clinton and her husband Marc Mezvinsky announced via Twitter the birth of their little princess, Charlotte Clinton Mezvinsky. News outlets jumped on the news pronto, but in true Clinton fashion, details were slim. All we know is that Charlotte was born in New York City and that she looks sweet swaddled in a blanket even though we have yet to see her little face. The Clinton- Mezvinsky family released photos of her being held by her parents and by her former President and would-be President grandparents, but that is it. The only bonus we received was advice from a political royal of the opposite persuasion. Former President George W. Bush, a recent grandfather himself, was filmed telling royal Papa-to-be Clinton that he would soon be madly in love. Thanks for the tidbit, W, but if Chelsea's highly guarded childhood is any indicator, we may not see Charlotte again until she starts college, if then. The same weekend Princess Charlotte arrived, the world got a major dose of Hollywood royalty with the romantic Venice wedding of silver-haired heartthrob George Clooney to the spectacularly glamorous human rights attorney Amal Alamuddin, instantly catapulting her into Tinsel town royalty. If you were disappointed by seeing little about Charlotte except her blankie, you were surely happier with Amal and George. Thus far, I have seen accounts of every outfit each of them wore during their over-the-top wedding weekend — his razor- tailored suits and perfectly matched ties and her new designer duds, including one dress that looked all the world like a ballet tutu. Then there was the coverage of George's famous movie star chums and what they wore, with all sorts of news tidbits of all sorts of trivia. My fave is that with his perfect wedding tuxedo George also wore gold cuff links with the word "George" inscribed on them in Arabic, a gift from the bride. Something tells me we are going to be seeing a lot more of Amal and George than we are of Charlotte. The real royals have also weighed in with news of their own. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, aka Catherine and William, have another little bun in the oven, a sibling for His Royal Highness Prince George, now 1. Two tidbits stand out here. One is that mum Catherine is once again sick as a dog with nausea and very much under medical care until the oopsies pass. The other, my fave, is a recent photo of baby George wearing a big fat grumpy face. Maybe he had indigestion, but the caption hinted this was his royal reaction to the thought of a brother or sister to vie for parental, maybe even public, attention. Something also tells me we are going to be seeing about as much of George for a while as we do of Charlotte. All this royalty exposure set me to wondering what is it that fascinates us about people whose lives are clearly so different than our own, people whose lives seem charmed, people whose lives seem made easy by vast resources and fleets of assistants. Are we jealous? Are we voyeurs? Maybe both? The reality is that while most of us do not live in a royal palace nor did we marry in a chic hotel along Venice's Grand Canal, we do have families and we do know what it is like to have a crying newborn and a grumpy toddler. Many of us know what it is like to have morning sickness and just keep going. And while we may not see them au natural so often, I am sure that Chelsea, Amal and even Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, have bad hair days and spats with their hubbies, however glamorous they may be in public. I remember as a child telling my mother that I wished I were someone whose name I no longer remember but who led a life I perceived as more interesting and less burdened than my own. Always wise, my mother responded probably the way yours did when you voiced a similar fantasy. She told me to be careful what I wished for and that there is no way to know what really goes on inside any other human being's life, no matter what it looks like from the outside. Truth be told, at my stage of life, I really do not want a full time infant or a rambunctious toddler. I do not want people following me around to take my picture, and I certainly do not want to be dressed and groomed to the nines every time I step my big toe out the door. Blessedly, life often puts us in places where we are most comfortable for which I am deeply grateful. I do not covet Amal's tutu, but I would not have minded getting her mile long legs…. Surrounded by Royalty by MARGARET DICKSON The Clintons' latest princess, Charlotte, makes her debut.
