There is nothing to be compared to the feeling that comes with this time of the year. The colors of burgundy, orange and golden yellow burst from the hillsides as the leaves of Spring and Summer bid farewell. The smell of hot apple cider, wood burning stoves and pumpkin pie fi ll the air. John Donne, a famous poet, put it into words, "No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face." Hay rides, fall festivals, church homecomings, football games and Halloween treats are all a part of the celebration of Autumn Joy. I have often compared the seasons to the stages in life, the new life and exuberance of Spring. The freedom and playfulness of Summertime are compared to the younger years of life and then enters Autumn with all of her grandeur and maturity. Along with the colorful changing of the leaves is also a sign of wisdom and perseverance. Even though the youthful days are enjoyable, the autumn years can be just as satisfying and fulfi lling. Who doesn't love grandchildren (we get to send them home after spoiling them) and with it comes the ability to refl ect on life and its priorities. Autumn is also a time to make application of life's lessons and to share this learned experience with a wide eyed youth. Autumn is a gentle reminder that whatever must be done should be done with haste. The harvest must be completed and everything secured for a time of cold and hibernation. Although we can't relive the exciting days of spring and summer; we can still ponder the wonderful colors, smells and activities of a bountiful harvest. Life blesses us with Autumn Joy!
