SUSANVILLE » Visiting Corning shut out Lassen 3-0 Monday to get the Lady Cardinals back into the win column. It was Corning's second 3-0 victory over Lassen this season, as the Lady Cardinals improved to 5-2 in Eastern Athletic League play. Whitney Armstrong scored twice for Corning. Kobye Rezendes set up Grace Mora for the final score with a beautiful flat pass. Mora was unguarded and got a hard push across for the score. Armstrong recorded three shots, while Cassie Carter and Mandy Lomeli had two shots each. Sarah Boone made nine saves for Corning. "We played with intensity and had fantastic passing," coach Te- resa Lamb said. "We were look- ing up and calling for the pass." Ronnie Hammons had a strong game with her hustling, Lamb said. And in one of the few things you can credit the Raiders for this season, they did what they had to do: fire head coach Dennis Allen. This move is not going to save the season. The Raiders are still going to lose most of their games, again. They're not going to sniff the playoffs. Whomever takes over will likely be an in-house interim. Which means he had a hand in the em- barrassment that is this season so far, and he will probably keep the same system (perhaps with a few tweaks they'd been wanting to input but Allen said no to). For the record, general man- ager Reggie McKenzie needs to be next. It's going to take the coup of the decade to overcome his missteps. Like Megatron for a fourth-round pick and an Oak- landish gift card. But I don't see that happening. "I think the last pitcher who swung that hard was Babe Ruth," the legendary Dodgers broadcaster said. The most impressive part of the moment wasn't Bumgar- ner's mighty cut, the firm fast- ball Zack Greinke threw or Scul- ly's amused call, but rather that it existed at all. Having already thrown 108 pitches, Bumgarner was allowed to hit for himself with one out in the eighth in- ning of a late September game the Giants trailed by a run. ManagerBruceBochycouldn't think of any other pitchers he has had who would have hit in that situation. But Bumgarner had earned the chance, not just with a two-run blast earlier in the game that supplied the only Giants runs and gave him four homers for the year, but with a .258 average and competitive at- bats from opening day through his final start. "It was a compliment to the year he had with the bat," Bo- chy said. There are many reasons why Bumgarner was Bochy's no- brainer choice to start Wednes- day's wild card game here in Pittsburgh. He had a 2.98 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 219 strikeouts, a resume that puts him among the best in the game. But Bumgar- ner's 18 wins were due to more than just his talented left arm. He fields his position well and has become a forceful control- ler of the running game. And then there's the thunderous bat, one that isn't out of place when Bumgarner occasionally hits in the same batting practice group as Hunter Pence, Buster Posey and Pablo Sandoval. Among pitchers with at least 50 plate appearances, Bumgar- ner led the way in average, runs (10) and RBIs (15, tying Juan Marichal's San Francisco Gi- ants record). He became the second pitcher in MLB history to hit two grand slams in one season and his .470 slugging percentage would have ranked 14th among National League position players had he quali- fied, ahead of players like Fred- die Freeman and Ryan Braun, and teammates Pence and San- doval. "Some things are hard to ex- plain," the 25-year-old southpaw said, smiling. After big days at the plate, Bumgarner never has a difficult time explaining what happened, saying he just swings as hard as he can. Among the five inductees in the Class of 2014 is Bev Howard. Howard was truly a legendary figure for Lady Spartans athletics. She began her teaching career at Red Bluff High School in 1966 at a time where there were no or- ganized athletic programs for girls. Sports-minded girls instead gathered after school to take part in activities under Howard. She guided the Red Bluff girls to quai-league cham- pionships in 1972- 1974. With the introduc- tion of Title IX in 1972 organized sports league were estab- lished and Howard be- gan a coaching career that spanned three decades, three sports and numerous league and section champi- onships. When she retired in 2002 she was honored with a plaque refer- ring to her as "The Winningest Coach" in Red Bluff High School history. In 1974 Coach "Howie" as she was known began coaching bas- ketball and softball in the newly formed Northern Athletic League. Because of the over- lapping playoff sea- son she eventually gave up coaching basket- ball to focus on volley- ball, where she served as v ar si ty c oa ch u nt il 1989. She took over as ju- nior varsity softball coach and served in the position until 2002. At one point she coached a stream of 50 consecutive league wins. Howard also coached junior varsity volleyball from 1979-1999, winning her first of many NAL ti- tles in her first year. After retirement and overcom- ing some health problems she came back to coach Red Bluff's freshman basketball team from 2005-2007. Howard still has a strong presence at Red Bluff athlet- ics and can be seen every year the scorer's table of the Holiday Classic. Lady Spartans athletics cer- tainly owe their roots to Howard. The Hall of fame members join- ing Howard include Doug Dreier, Gale Gilbert, Kelly Jackson and Angie Weir Miller. Previous inductees to the Hall have been Kathy Long Brandt, Tammy Brown, Bob Grimm, Bill Jacobs, Mort Kaer, Doug Sale and Ed Stroman. The Booster Club has donated more than $23,000 to Spartans athletics this year. Tickets for the Oct. 11 dinner at the Red Bluff Community and Senior Center are $25. They are available through Spartan ath- letes, at ReMax Top Properties or by emailing spartanboosters@sb- cglobal.net. The night begins with a social hour at 5:30 p.m. followed by a trip-tip dinner at 6:30 p.m. The event is begin sponsored by Cornerstone Community Bank.
