14 UCW MARCH 26 - APRIL 1, 2014 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Summerscapes Program Offers Fun Learning for Youth by COURTNEY BAUGHARD With all the winter weather we've been having, are you and the kids ready for summertime? Summer is an exciting season for children — no school, warm weather and extra time to sleep! While summer is a fun time of year, it often presents a dilemma for parents who want to provide fun and educational activities for their kids. Fayetteville Technical Community College has the solution, and it's called Summerscapes! Children ages 8-18 can get involved in fun classes at FTCC to express their creativity, discover new talents, create lasting artwork and dream of a bright future! While kids may be more interested in the fun classes, parents may be interested in the academic refresher courses. These classes are offered to help students master the grade-level objectives set by the state of North Carolina and are taught by highly skilled and motivated teachers who will provide an environment fostering individual growth. Whether the interest is art, photography, reading, cooking or music, Summerscapes has it all! Some examples of Summerscapes classes include Sculpture, Yoga, Golf, Chef for a Day, Guitar, Reading and Math Refresher and Multicultural Arts. Summerscapes 2014 will begin in June (after school ends and to allow year- round students to participate) and runs through the middle of August. Classes are listed in the Spring class schedule (available at the link listed below), and classes beginning later (between July and August) will appear in the Summer class schedule. Some classes may require that supplies be brought to class; however, any additional fees for class activities are kept as low as possible. FTCC can offer these self-supporting courses only during the summer, so take advantage of these enjoyable, inexpensive learning opportunities for your children. Parents should remember to accompany children into the classroom on the first day of class to meet the instructor, discuss supplies and leave a contact number. Guardians are required to accompany children to the classroom and pick them up from the classroom immediately after class ends. Parents and guardians are welcome to stay inside the building but not inside the classrooms, as we want participating children to have an environment that best promotes learning. Classrooms are not open until time for class to start, so children should not be dropped off early for classes. Parents who have children participating in cooking classes should inform the instructor if the child has any food allergies. When registering children for class, parents should complete a contact form and leave with the registration clerk or bring to class on the first day. Join us for Summerscapes 2014 as we learn, create and explore together! Because classes fill quickly, FTCC requires pre-registration. To learn more about Summerscapes or how to register, please call us at (910) 678- 8243/8309 or e-mail baugharc@faytechcc.edu.
