D 1, 2010  FROM WINDMILLS PG. 22 the water to flow, I would forget the in- convenience and enjoy the quiet hum of the windmill as it filled our storage tank. When we bought the Mott place in 1938 the windmill had a wooden tower. It would creak, groan and move to and fro, so we had to tie the tail down on very windy days. From the tail there was a wire that came down to a wooden brake-handle. By pulling down, then snapping the handle into the locked position, the wire would pull the tail tight against the blades facing cross- wind. Then the tail could not catch the wind, and the blades would not go around. That way the windmill would not run wild, perhaps destroying itself in a windstorm. In 1935, Aero-motor, Apex, Demp- ster, Samson, Woodmans, and sev- eral smaller manufactures made more made 100,000 windmills. In 1939 we decided that our windmill and its old wooden tower needed to be replaced. It was summertime and our new or- chard of fruit trees needed a depend- able supply of water. We ordered our new windmill and steel tower from the Sears & Roebuck catalog. When it arrived by Western Truck Lines we contracted with Joe Scott to assemble and erect the wind- mill. We had no idea how tedious it would be to set up and raise the tower. We celebrated when it was finally op- Windmill near Q Mountain erational and water again flowed into our storage tank. Today there not very many of the old windmills left that dotted the land- scape before the Rural Electrifica- tion of America came to Quartzsite. But I will always remember counting the windmills on our first drive into Quartzsite. Try counting how many are left standing today. (The next story will be: “The R.E.A.
