My mother told me that her parents also complained about the way things were. Why is that we wish for things to be as they once were? Could it be that the past is familiar and the future is unknown? I’ve heard many complain about how Quartzsite is not like it used to be. Many complain about how the town is dying, that there’s nothing going on during the summer. I guess they haven’t seen the new businesses that have come to town or all the new vendors that are drawn to Quartzsite by some unknown force. Change is inevitable. People just don’t like change. However, how we react to it is optional. We can choose to be miserable or choose to open up to the possibilities of the future. We can benefit from change by reacting to it in a positive way. Changes occur an all communities. Some changes are smoother than others. People go through stages when change occurs in life; Endings, Transitions, and Beginnings. Recently I talked with a woman who was “grieving” the “old Quartzsite”. Sometimes we get stuck in that griev- ing process. When we move through our grief, no matter what we’re dealing with, we can start the Transition process, which allows us to let go and move on... but, move on to what? I’ve heard many people say, “Quartz- site is in Transition”. To move through the Transition Stage, people need to know what to expect. Our leaders must communicate strong goals and effective guidance. D 1, 2010 Editorial BY SHANANA “RAIN” GOLDEN-BEAR Some people move through transition, embracing change. One such group is the Arizona Centennial Committee of Quartzsite. The group met all summer, taking in suggestions, planning events, and listening to new ideas. They just announced their calendar of events for the Centennial year beginning February 2011. The calendar is a “work in prog- ress”, so keep checking back! You can find the calendar on page 17 of this issue. If your organization would like to get listed, please email Monica Timberlake at azcentennialofqtz@yahoo.com. Please bring your ideas to the AZ Cen- tennial of Quartzsite events meeting on Thursday, Dec. 2nd at 4pm at the Senior Center. Speaking of change...readers will notice that this issue is heavier than normal. Yes, there are 40 pages, and lots of ad- vertisers; many new advertisers wanting to get the word out about their business. Please check out all the ads and take advantage of the surplus of creative folks we now have in town. So please patron- ize the advertisers who all offer such great services and products within our community. So, some may say the town is dying, and some may say the town is growing. Is your cup half empty, or half full? There are many exciting upcoming events planned for Quartzsite. Change can be challenging to deal with. How will you participate in the progress of Quartzsite? Everybody loves progress, but hardly anyone loves change. Will you be part of the solution?
