March 19 - 25, 2023 WHATS UP! T11 off the air. Are they true? A: Every show gets canceled eventually, and so this rumor will one day be true. But not to- day. As of now, CBS has neither re- newed nor canceled "Blue Bloods" for another season of family dinners, precinct politics and, in between, busting bad guys. "Blue Bloods" is in the midst of its 13th season, so you had bet- ter ask a professional gambler whether that's a factor for or against its continuation. Is it more likely to be renewed be- cause CBS has done so 12 times already and clearly loves it? Or is it more likely canceled because, as I said, all shows get the axe one day and this show's luck has to run out sometime? CBS generally issues its re- newal and cancellation notices in mid-April, so we'll know one way or another soon enough. I'm not a gambler, but in this case I think the smart money is on another renewal. Long-run- ning procedurals like "Blue Bloods" are a central part of CBS's brand. And while the show's ratings have been slip- ping a little, it's no more than can be expected — it still averages six million viewers per episode, which is more than a lot of buzz- ier shows get. And it's doing that on Friday night, which is traditionally a TV dead zone. Thanks in part to dependable old "Blue Bloods," CBS has owned Friday nights for a while. It's worth noting that the show has beaten the rumor mill in the past. "Insiders" have said more than once that the show was about to get the chop, but it's still here. Q: Are they doing any more "Cloverfield" movies? A: Yes, but in keeping with the tradition of that series, "yes" is all we know. The sci-fi film series, which kicked off with 2008's "Clover- field," followed by "10 Clover- field Lane" (2016) and "The Cloverfield Paradox" (2018), has always been secretive about its plots — to the extent of hid- ing how the films are actually related, outside their titles. (Spoiler alert: the sequels' links to the original were revealed late in each movie as a plot twist.) And so, all we know for sure right now is that J.J. Abrams, the super-producer behind all three films (as well as landmark TV drama "Lost" and many other films and shows) is indeed working on a fourth "Clover- field" film. It was said to be film- ing in September of last year. We don't know when it will come out, or indeed how it will tie in to the previous films, about monsters from outer space who come and threaten all life on Earth. You can count on hearing a lit- tle bit more in advance of the film's release, and then hearing a lot more afterwards — that's at least the way the last three played out. Have a question? Has he had any oth- er acting roles? A: More than you'd think, and it may have all started with "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." Mike Tyson, one of the most famous (and infamous) profes- sional boxers of all time, has of course spent a lot of time on screen as himself. One such ap- pearance, in the 2009 surprise- hit comedy "The Hangover," marked a sort of transition: he played a sort of heightened ver- sion of himself, and he had to de- liver lines like an actor. His per- formance, such as it was, was well reviewed, and it seems to have led to him getting roles as other people for a change. The "SVU" episode you refer to, a Season 14 episode that aired in 2013, seems to have been the first time he played a character — a death-row inmate who helps the team catch a serial sex- ual abuser. More characters seemed to flow from that, and now Tyson has built up a nice little resume of acting gigs. These include a role in "Ip Man 3" (2015), part of the long- running, high-grossing martial arts franchise; and, less predict- ably, in the comedy "A Madea Family Funeral" (2019). He's continuing the sideline with a high-profile new drama, "Black Flies," due out later this year. He'll be appearing opposite modern screen great Sean Penn ("Mystic River," 2003), further cementing his own credibility as an actor. We can't talk about Tyson's screen career without mention- ing the weirdness that is "Mike Tyson Mysteries," though. This have-to-see-it-to-believe-it ani- mated comedy was co-created by and voice stars Tyson as a version of himself that went around solving mysteries with the help of a talking pigeon and some sidekicks. Despite how un- real all that sounds, it aired for four seasons on the Adult Swim network from 2014 to 2020 and is a cult fan favorite (it holds a 97% audience approval rating on popular ratings site Rotten To- matoes).
