We cannot think of a better way to celebrate the new year and this Martin Luther King Jr. holiday than watching, supporting and showcasing the talented high school athletics we have in Cumberland County's public and private schools. This event was created in January 2020 to showcase ALL of the area's basketball programs and tomorrow's upcoming talented players and superstars. In addition, the objective of this annual event is to invite college and university basketball coaches to the Fayetteville/Cumberland County community to observe all our local high school talents in one day. To this end, we have extended invitations to all local high schools to send their best teams and most talented players to compete in a friendly but competitive Public School vs. Private School Showdown. The prize? Bragging rights for the entire year! Our inaugural event hosted only 12 girls and boys teams, with the Private Schools taking the inaugural title 4 to 2. However, because of the tournament's success, we are incredibly proud to announce that we have 20 teams competing in this year's MLK tournament. The fun and excitement begins with the girls teams playing on Saturday, Jan. 14, and the boys teams on Monday, Jan. 16. It will be two days of outstanding high school basketball, cheering on the superstars of tomorrow. A special thanks to our title sponsor, Up & Coming Weekly community newspaper, and Principal Royvell Godbolt for allowing Terry Sanford to host this great event. This tournament honors and celebrates the legacy of this renowned civil rights leader. King advocated peace, harmony and the coming together of all peoples to celebrate humanity based on kindness, peace, tolerance, character, and not on racial backgrounds. This is what the MLK Dream Jam is all about. As you will see, this sporting event celebrates those principles as well as the teachers, coaches and young people who are America's future.
