December 18 - 24, 2022 WHATS UP! T11 role on "Everybody Hates Chris," which he landed when he was 13, that brought Wil- liams to public attention. The critically acclaimed se- ries ran for four seasons on UPN and later the CW, ending in 2009. After that, he took on a few small supporting roles here and there before having a big 2012, showing up on the sil- ver screen in "Peeples," pro- duced by hitmaker extraordi- naire Tyler Perry ("Diary of a Mad Black Woman," 2005), and toplining the Disney Channel original film "Let It Shine." He appeared two years later in the big-screen indie phe- nomenon "Dear White People" (2014), and later took on a dif- ferent role in the Netflix series adaptation. And in 2019 he had a leading role in the short-lived ABC action series "Whiskey Cavalier." That more or less brings us up to today, when you can catch him starring in the Em- my-winning ABC sitcom "Ab- bott Elementary." And all that's just skimming the surface. Williams has had an incredibly busy decade-and- a-bit since "Everybody Hates Chris" ended, managing to sur- vive the child-star curse. Q: Why is Judy Woodruff leaving "PBS NewsHour"? I can't imagine watching it without her. A: She'd be flattered to hear you say that, since she said a very similar thing about the show's original hosts when she announced her exit. Judy Woodruff, who has an- chored the show since 2013 (and has done it on her own since 2016 when her co-anchor Gwen Ifill died), said she was leaving to take on a new news project, "Judy Woodruff Pres- ents: America at a Crossroads." "I am thrilled to be embark- ing on this new project to try to understand the most divid- ed time in American politics since I started reporting," she said in her official departure announcement. The news was first reported by Variety, which also points out that Woodruff is now 75, "an age when even the most popular TV personae mull a change in regular duties." This really does seem more like a change than a rest, to borrow from the old saying. She says her new series will take her on the road, "to listen to the American people them- selves, in cities, small towns and rural areas, from one end of the country to the other." That's not to say that an- choring and serving as manag- ing editor on a nightly news program is easy, per se, but at least the commute's better. And so, on Dec. 30 she'll rise one last time from the an- chor's chair of "PBS News- Hour," a show previously ti- tled "The MacNeil/Lehrer Re- port," after its original hosts. Woodruff said in her state- ment that, in the same way that you currently see the show as hers, she was hum- bled to be part of carrying on their legacy. "To follow in the footsteps of Jim Lehrer and Robert Mac- Neil has been the honor of a lifetime." And so now it's up to the next hosts to make it their own and build on Woodruff 's legacy. Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: Is there a 'definitive' film version of "The Nut- cracker"? Can I find it on DVD? A: There really isn't a single, definitive version of the time- less ballet "The Nutcracker," but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Rather than finding one good version and a bunch of poor ones, which is usually what happens when we search for a "definitive" anything, in this case we have a number of different versions that all have their own charms. And all are available on DVD from the usual retailers. There's a somewhat tradi- tionalist version: 1993's "The Nutcracker," starring a still- young Macaulay Culkin (just a couple of years after his 1990 breakout "Home Alone"). Culkin is not, of course, a bal- let dancer, so the role was somewhat adjusted for his less trained legs. There's a cinematic retell- ing, 2018's "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms," which isn't even a ballet, but on the upside is made by Disney with all its attendant glitz and pro- duction value. If you're willing to deviate even further from the classic, you could check out "The Nut- cracker Prince" (1990), a car- toon version with a star-stud- ded voice cast including Kiefer Sutherland ("24"), Megan Fol- lows ("Anne of Green Gables," 1985) and Peter O'Toole ("Law- rence of Arabia," 1962). Whereas if you're a real tra- ditionalist and you're willing to go digging through the used-video vendors online, you can go with the 1977 ver- sion, a TV production made for CBS by the legendary Mikhail Baryshnikov and the American Ballet Theatre. Q: Did the kid who played young Chris on "Everybody Hates Chris" continue act- ing? A: It's safe to say at this point (he's 30 now) that Tyler James Williams is one of those rare actors who transitioned pretty smoothly from child stardom to adult stardom. He continues to be in demand to this day. He had a few small roles in his preteen years, but it was his Sergei Polunin and Misty Copeland in "The Nutcracker and the Four Realms" HOLLYWOOD Q&A Solution on page T23 Use the clues above and beside the grid to fill in the squares www.advancepestcontrolnwa.com Family Owned, Competitively Priced, Quality Service Since 1981 Rogers 479-636-5590 Springdale 479-756-1788 Eureka Springs 479-253-8967 PEST CONTROL TERMITE FERTILIZATION WEED CONTROL PRE-EMERGENTS
