If you're a fan of kitchen contests that reward both skill and strategy, Netflix's "Cook at all Costs" may be of interest to you and yours this holiday season. "Cook at all Costs" debuted Dec. 16, on the streamer, and it's just in time for viewers looking to add to their pre- or post-holiday viewing wish list. It is hosted by chef/restaura- teur Jordan Andino — you might recognize him as the host of Cooking Channel's "Late Night Eats" or from his guest appearances on such shows as "Chopped" and "Beat Bobby Flay." Most cooking competitions don't take food costs and bud- gets under consideration, and if they do, that angle is often limited to a thrift-themed challenge or a one-off episode. (There are some exceptions, of course — Ree Drummond's recent "Big Bad Budget Battle" comes to mind.) Watching chefs unburdened by costs doesn't reflect reality, but it does give viewers an idea of what can be achieved, or even elevated, when one has access to the best ingredients. But do you really need expensive in- gredients to create a true showstopper? "Cook at all Costs" puts that idea to the test. In each episode, three home cooks will have to bid on in- gredients and create a dish that will hopefully wow a pan- el of celebrity guest judges, in- cluding Esther Choi. Each contestant starts out with $25,000 in the bank, and they'll have to decide whether they want to use that money to: bid big on the highest-quality in- gredients; buy the humble ba- sics that form the foundation for something outstanding; or gamble on a big surprise. There isn't necessarily a right or wrong approach here, provided each cook has enough confidence, skill and know-how to create (or coax out) big flavors using those in- gredients. In the end, the only thing that matters to the judg- es is how that final dish tastes. The money spent on that dish will matter to the contestants, however, because the winner gets whatever money is left in the bank. That's the prize.
