WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM OCTOBER 12 - 18, 2022 UCW 49 On Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. the U.S Army Airborne and Special Operations Museum will host Robert Bielsky and Erin Blankenship, who will speak about the legacy of the Bielski Brothers. is event is free to the public, and visitors can regis- ter here: https://bit.ly/bielsky2. Since July 4, the ASOM has hosted the Courage and Compassion: e Legacy of the Bielski Broth- ers exhibit. It is the story of a World War II parti- san group which was one of the most significant Jewish resistance efforts against Nazi Germany. e heroic efforts of the three Bielski brothers (Tuvia, Asael and Zus) helped save more than 1,200 lives while taking refuge from the Nazis in the forests surrounding Novogrudok, Belarus. In the forest, they formed a community of men, women and children. rough the brothers' leadership, the group survived starvation, harsh winters, and the threat of the Nazis and their col- laborators. "e Bielski brothers' story is one of extraor- dinary compassion and bravery in the face of unimaginable adversity. is exhibit makes a striking case for the tenacity of the human spirit," said Jim Bartlinski, Director of the ASOM and the Fort Bragg Museum Enterprise. Robert Bielsky is the son of the legendary partisan commander, Tuvia Bielski, portrayed by Daniel Craig in the Paramount Vantage film "De- fiance." Bielsky (who ends his name with a "y" — "because that is the way my mother spelled it") is the youngest of Tuvia Bielski's three children. Bielsky was born in Brooklyn, unlike his older brother, Michael, and sister, Ruth, who were born in Ramat Gan, Israel, where the family had moved after the war. Bielsky lectures around the world about the exploits of his father and uncles and their resis- tance against the Nazis during the Holocaust. Erin Blankenship is a senior museum executive who curated the Courage and Compassion ex- hibit and serves as interim director of the Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Petersburg. Additionally, the ASOM is showing a screen- ing of "Defiance" on Oct. 16 at 1:30 p.m. in the museum's Yarborough Bank eater. is show- ing is made possible with a grant from the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County. No reservations are necessary. is event is also free and open to the public.
