T22 WHATS UP! September 18 - 24, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert The ongoing search [of Mar-a- Lago] was tied to "whether [Trump] took classified records from the White House to his Florida residence." Spoiler: he did. ... He incited an insurrec- tion, he extorted Ukraine, he put the bop in the bop shoo bop shoo bop, he put the ram in the rama lama ding dong, then made the rama lama ding dong sign an NDA! The FBI's dress code for the [Mar-a-Lago raid] event was in- dictment casual. A handful of agents went in suits, "but most wore T-shirts" and "cargo pants." Yeah, so good luck get- ting your dad to change his out- fit now! Right after the FBI raid, the term "civil war" started trending on Twitter, which can only mean one thing: the civil war is dating Pete Davidson. [Rudy] Giuliani has been or- dered "to testify before [a] grand jury" in Fulton County [Geor- gia] next week. Oh, you gotta feel bad for Georgia. First, the devil went down there and now they've gotta get a visit from Rudy? At least they're both great at fiddlin'. The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Rep. Liz Cheney, who's on the Jan. 6 Committee and has been outspoken about Trump's defeat in the election, lost her primary race to a challenger he en- dorsed. Trump was so excited, he threw a ticker-tape parade made out of classified docu- ments! CDC Director Rochelle Walen- sky said that the agency ... didn't respond quickly enough to the pandemic. They might be on to something because everyone was like, "I'm sorry, which of the current pandemics are you re- ferring to?" Scientists are working to bring back the Tasmanian Tiger, which went extinct almost 100 years ago [in 1936]. Scientists were like, "we brought back Taco Bell's Mexican Pizza, we can bring this back, too!" I read that Kim Jong-un and Vladimir Putin have been ex- changing letters vowing to strengthen their ties against the U.S. Oh man, you know that irks Trump. It's like hearing your two best friends are hang- ing out behind your back. Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Lamorne Morris Guillermo, did you watch the new "Game of Thrones" show last night? ... It's called "House of the Dragon." Now, when I first heard that title I thought, "Man, the Chinese restaurant on my block is finally getting its own TV show!" Late Night With Seth Meyers First lady Dr. Jill Biden apolo- gized ... after she said that the Latino community is "as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio." Said Biden in her apology: "I'm as sorry as the breakfast tacos at Taco Bell." Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez reportedly got married over the weekend [of Aug. 20], because right now, that's the only way a Red Sox fan can get a win in the Bronx. Starbucks CEO Howard Schul- tz announced recently that the coffee chain will close 16 stores due to rising crime. The most egregious crime? Waiting until you're at the front of the line before looking at the menu. The fast food restaurant Sub- way recently changed the names of several of its sand- wiches, including switching the name of the meatball mari- nara to "The Boss," as opposed to what's usually called "the boss" at Subway: a 16-year-old kid. LEGO recently announced that they will release a new set based on the sitcom "The Of- fice." Though, if your kid wants that, bad news: they're a Dwight. Producers have announced that a reboot of the procedural "Criminal Minds" will air on the streaming service Para- mount+. So if you're a big fan of detective work, try and figure out how to watch Paramount+. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media 'Avalon' bound: While Neve Campbell isn't returning to the Scream film franchise, she will be returning to Netf- lix's "The Lincoln Lawyer" for a second season. She will also soon headline another David E. Kelley TV adaptation: the ABC drama series "Avalon." The Canadian actress has been tapped to play L.A. Sher- iff 's Department Det. Nicole "Nic" Searcy, the lead role in the series, which received a straight-to-series order earlier this year. Based on a short story by "Lincoln Lawyer" author Michael Connelly, "Avalon" is set on Catalina Island, where Nic heads up a small office. In fact, she's the only detective as- signed to the substation. Campbell's character is de- scribed as "somewhat inscruta- ble" but "isn't easily intimidat- ed and holds firm to her mor- als" — that might be why she's been posted to Catalina's big- gest city, a gig that "no career- driven L.A. cop wants." Soon enough, Nic is pulled into a career-defining mystery that will challenge everything she knows about herself and the island. "Rescue Me" actor Steven Pasquale has been tapped as the male lead and will play the role of Los Angeles County Sheriff 's Det. William Clay- pool, who is called to Catalina to investigate a discovery. Al- exa Mansour ("The Walking Dead: World Beyond") will also star. "Avalon" marks Campbell's second collaboration with Kel- ley, Connelly, executive pro- ducer Ross Fineman and A+E Studios, after starring opposite Manuel Garcia-Rulfo ("The Magnificent Seven," 2016) in Season 1 of "The Lincoln Law- yer." She'll be a recurring guest star in Season 2. Campbell also has a recur- ring role in Peacock's upcom- ing series "Twisted Metal," but her most recent appearance was on the big screen, courtesy of this year's addition to the Scream franchise. That fifth in- stallment grossed $140 million worldwide and a sixth Scream film is expected to land in 2023 — this time without Campbell, who cited pay disparity as the reason for bowing out. Maybe 'McBeal': Speaking of David E. Kelley productions, it's been 20 years since "Ally Mc- Beal" left TV, but the Emmy- winning legal dramedy may be the latest long-gone TV series to be revived for modern audienc- es. According to Deadline, a se- quel series may be in early de- velopment at ABC. Similar to NBC's reboot of "Night Court," this new iteration would focus on the daughter of a character from the original series — in this case, the daughter of Renée Rad- dick (originally played by Lisa Nicole Carson, "ER"). Of course, the big question is whether Ally herself, Calista Flockhart ("Supergirl"), will re- turn to the series that earned her three Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe. Flockhart, who is set to play Lee Radziwill opposite Tom Hollander's ("Pride & Preju- dice," 2005) Truman Capote in the upcoming season of "Feud," has reportedly been approached to reprise her role in some ca- pacity and serve as executive producer, but nothing has been announced just yet. As for Kelley, the prolific TV producer isn't involved in this new iteration but has reportedly given it and writer/producer Karin Gist ("Our Kind of Peo- ple") his blessing. Axed by Apple: "Alias" ac- tress Jennifer Garner was set to star in the Apple TV+ limited se- ries "My Glory Was I Had Such Friends," but Garner has now exited the project, reportedly due to scheduling reasons. It's the latest setback for the long-gestating project from J.J. Abrams' Bad Robot production company and Warner Bros. TV. This change, plus the long de- lay, has seemingly dealt a fatal blow to the production at Apple TV+. Despite handing it a straight- to-series order in 2018, the streamer has decided it will no longer move forward with the project. But all hope is not lost. Bad Robot and Warner Bros. TV are reportedly looking for a new home for their planned TV adaptation of Amy Silverstein's inspiring memoir about the power of friendship and the support the author received while awaiting a heart trans- plant. Meanwhile, Garner is busy headlining another limited se- ries for the streamer, "The Last Thing He Told Me." It, too, is an adaptation of a bestselling book: Laura Dave's mystery novel about a woman's efforts to un- cover the truth about her hus- band's disappearance. The book was a Reese With- erspoon Book Club pick, and Witherspoon's ("Little Fires Ev- erywhere") Hello Sunshine pro- duction company is also behind the Apple TV+ limited series (along with 20th Television). Garner took over the role of Hannah Hall from Julia Roberts ("Gaslit"), who also pulled out last year due to scheduling. Gar- ner has called it her "dream role," and, according to her Ins- tagram feed, she even signed up for woodworking classes in or- der to get into character. Angourie Rice ("Mare of East- town") will play the role of her character's 16-year-old step- daughter, Bailey. Neve Campbell to star in "Avalon" STARS ON SCREEN
