T22 WHATS UP! August 7 - 13, 2022 The Late Show with Stephen Colbert We are coming to you just hours after the Jan. 6 Committee shocked the world [June 28]. ... And nobody saw this coming. They were scheduled to be in re- cess until the week of July 11. They hauled everybody back in from vacation — Congressman Bennie Thompson was still wearing his floaties! If the court believes this type of Christian ritual [praying public- ly at midfield during a game], then I'm sure they'll be fine with every religion going varsity. I can't wait for the Satanic cheer- leaders: "D-E-V-I-L! Come on, team, let's burn in hell! Sacrifice a goat!" The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon Today [June 29] is the iPhone's 15th birthday ... which means right now a Nokia is in a bar somewhere going, "Fifteen years ago I was on top of the world!" ... The iPhone is so popular it sin- gle-handedly turned Apple and rice into a trillion-dollar indus- try. The FCC has asked Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores over national se- curity concerns. Then Apple and Google saw how much money they were making off TikTok and told the FCC to go FCC themselves. Empire magazine just released the first look at Kate Winslet in "Avatar: The Way of Water." ... This is the first time Kate's had a blue co-star since Leonardo Di- Caprio at the end of "Titanic." Today [June 30] she [Beyoncé] released the cover art for her new album, "Renaissance," and now I need a new entrance to my July Fourth barbecue. ... That looks like Beyoncé and her horse going through the TSA scanner. The Late Late Show With James Corden President Biden called on Con- gress for a three-month suspen- sion of the Federal Gas Tax. This so-called gas tax holiday would potentially cut 18 cents per gal- lon during the busiest travel months. If this doesn't work, President Biden's next plan is just to let everything kind of suck until the end of his presi- dency. ... A gas tax holiday sounds like what Republicans celebrate instead of Earth Day. A man in Idaho has set a new re- cord by getting 59 marshmal- lows catapulted into his mouth in one minute. ... I feel like if that had happened during lockdown, we all would have been like, "Oh, that's impressive!" But now, out of lockdown, we're all a bit like, "Dude. What're you doing?" [But] I honestly didn't see much difference between that and what Steph Curry did in the [NBA] finals. Lizzo arrived on the red carpet [at the Met Gala] and she was playing the flute. She was play- ing the flute with corkscrew nails. ... You've heard of Edward Scissorhands; this is Wine-pour Lizzo Hands. Jimmy Kimmel Live! with Anthony Anderson Los Angeles is about to reach what the CDC calls a "high CO- VID community level." Yes, at this point, the COVID numbers in L.A. are as high as the people who live here. Why can't COVID be more like Jimmy and just take the [...] summer off? Late Night With Seth Meyers The Supreme Court ruled today [June 30] that the EPA does not have the authority to set emis- sions standards for existing power plants, but they are going to let you use the smoke for gen- der reveals. Bill Gates announced yesterday [May 10] that he tested positive for a breakthrough case of the coronavirus. Gates said he prob- ably got the virus because he forgot to install McAfee. Two unoccupied beach houses in North Carolina recently fell into the ocean or, as the the real- tor put it, "360-degree ocean views." An alligator was recently spot- ted in the drive-thru of a restau- rant in North Carolina. But this is annoying: he had no idea what he wanted. LATE LAUGHS BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media Hitting the trail: While cre- ator/executive producer Issa Rae has revealed she's still "ru- minating" on a possible "Inse- cure" spinoff, former cast mem- ber Christina Elmore has booked her next TV gig. Elmore, who played Condola in the HBO series and Marie in BET's "Twenties" (also on CBC Gem), has joined the cast of the HBO Max/Warner Bros. TV drama series "The Girls on the Bus." She'll star as a lead oppo- site Melissa Benoist ("Super- girl") and Natasha Behnam ("American Pie Presents: Girls' Rules," 2020). A political drama, "The Girls on the Bus" is based on a chapter in writer/executive producer Amy Chozick's memoir, "Chas- ing Hillary: Ten Years, Two Presidential Campaigns and One Intact Glass Ceiling," and also counts "Vampire Diaries" creator Julie Plec as one of its ex- ecutive producers. Per Deadline and Warner Bros. TV, the series centers on Sadie McCarthy (Benoist), a journalist who romanticizes the original "Boys on the Bus" and has scrapped her entire life for a shot at covering a presidential campaign. She hits the trail and eventually bonds with three fe- male competitors: Lola Gabriel (Behnam), an influencer known for her TikToks about politics; Kimberlyn (Elmore), an Ivy League-educated Regan Repub- lican and a reporter for Liberty News; and Grace, a character who had yet to be cast when El- more officially boarded the se- ries. Despite their differences, the four women become "a found family with a front-row seat to the greatest soap opera in town: the battle for the White House." "The Girl On The Bus" is one of several upcoming shows co- helmed by producer Plec since CW put the Vampire Diaries franchise on pause (at least for now, given that Plec told Enter- tainment Weekly "there's more to do" within that universe). Martin's move: Bad Boys franchise actor Martin Law- rence has stuck mostly to films since his '90s sitcom "Martin" ended, but that is about to change. Lawrence, who will next ap- pear in the film "Mindcage" op- posite John Malkovich ("Space Force") — no release date yet — is already set to star in an Eng- lish-language version of the popular Israeli series "Nehama." The U.S. adaptation, which was announced last fall, is the story of a happily married father of five (Lawrence) who quits his IT job to pursue his dream of be- ing a stand-up comedian. But af- ter his wife suddenly dies, Law- rence's character is forced to de- cide between his passion and his kids, who are struggling in the face of tragedy. In a more recent move, Law- rence has been tapped to play a "key" recurring role opposite Okieriete Onaodowan ("Hamil- ton," 2020) in the six-episode se- ries "Demascus," coming to AMC and AMC+ next year. Created by playwright Tear- rance Arvelle Chisholm ("Boo- merang"), "Demascus" is named for its lead character, a 33-year- old Black man (Onaodowan) who embarks on a journey of self-discovery using an innova- tive new technology that allows him to experience alternate ver- sions of his life. Lawrence will play Uncle For- ty, described as "a man who has seen better days." Despite his failing health, Uncle Forty is ea- ger to be acknowledged as the patriarch of the family. Of course, Lawrence is also tied to "Bad Boys 4," which is currently in preproduction, ac- cording to IMDb. Earlier reports suggested that Sony Pictures had put the Will Smith ("The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air")/Law- rence re-pairing on hold after Smith's Oscars outburst, but in May, studio chairman Tom Rothman insisted the movie has "been in development and still is." Lawrence himself recently told Ebony, "We got one more at least." Low-key casting: According to Deadline and online chatter, "Blindspotting" (2018) actor Ra- fael Casal may play a major role in the upcoming new season of Disney+'s Marvel series "Loki." This casting news is a little tricky (fittingly) because Casal's involvement with Season 2 hasn't been officially an- nounced, but a recently leaked photo taken from the "Loki" set showed Casal walking alongside series stars Tom Hiddleston (who plays Loki) and Owen Wil- son (who plays Mobius). That photo sparked tons of speculation online, where fans have theorized that Casal might play Zaniac, a lesser-known Thor villain and alien entity who possesses humans. Everything is pure specula- tion at this point, though, since studio executives and represen- tatives are keeping mum about the whole thing — pretty typical for Marvel projects. Casal is best known for co- writing, producing and starring in "Blindspotting," which he de- veloped with his collaborator, Daveed Diggs. The pair also teamed up for Starz's TV spinoff of the film, which has been re- newed for a second season. As for "Loki," Season 2 started shooting in London in June. While a premiere date hasn't been announced as of writing, the new season will likely drop sometime in 2023. Christina Elmore to star in "The Girls on the Bus" STARS ON SCREEN
