T8 WHATS UP! July 31 - August 6, 2022 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The Sandman" - Season 1 Fans of author Neil Gaiman and the hit Starz series "American Gods" have a new reason to get excited. Gaiman's "The Sand- man" comic book series gets its own small-screen debut Friday, Aug. 5, on Netflix. Weaving to- gether modern myth and dark fantasy, "The Sandman" follows Dream, also known as Mor- pheus (Tom Sturridge, "On the Road," 2012), the Master of Dreams, who gives shape to ev- eryone's darkest fears and fanta- sies. But when Dream is cap- tured by a wizard and impris- oned for over a century, he re- turns to find his realm in ruins. To set things right and restore order to his realm, Dream sets out on a journey through differ- ent worlds and timelines, where he encounters old friends and foes, as well as a variety of new beings and entities along the way. Developed for television by Gaiman, David S. Goyer ("The Dark Knight," 2008) and Allan Heinberg ("Grey's Anatomy"), "The Sandman" is directed by Jamie Childs ("His Dark Materi- als"), Andrés Baiz ("Narcos"), Louise Hooper ("Flesh and Blood"), Mairzee Almas ("Shad- ow and Bone"), Mike Barker ("The Handmaid's Tale") and Coralie Fargeat ("Revenge," 2017). WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "Thirteen Lives" (2022) Witness a story of heroism and bravery in the biographical dra- ma film "Thirteen Lives," pre- miering Friday, Aug. 5, on Prime. In 2018, the world watched as 12 players from a junior football team and their coach became trapped in the Tham Luang cave in the Chiang Rai Province of northern Thailand for 18 days. Having entered the cave without worry or incident, sudden heavy rainfall partially flooded the cave system, trapping the group deep inside. The rescue effort, which made international head- lines, involved more than 10,000 people, including rescue work- ers, divers, law enforcement of- ficers, soldiers and government representatives. The film chron- icles the harrowing story of the group trapped in the cave and the brave rescue workers who risked their own lives to bring them to freedom. Directed and produced by Oscar winner Ron Howard ("Frost/Nixon," 2008), "Thirteen Lives" is based on a story by Don MacPherson ("The Avengers," 1998) and William Nicholson ("Les Misérables," 2012), with a screenplay written by Nicholson.
