T7 BY MICHELLE ROSE TV Media I t's been nearly two de- cades since her death, but Julia Child still has the ability to command our at- tention — and, more impor- tantly, our respect. Her distinc- tive voice and sing-song deliv- ery were famously parodied in a "Saturday Night Live" skit and imitated in the 2009 film "Julie and Julia" (by Meryl Streep, no less), but her joie de vivre helped make cooking fun and accessible throughout her three-decade run on television. As one of the first TV chefs (and the author of "Mastering the Art of French Cooking"), Child transformed the way we cook, eat (and drink) and view food, both in life and on TV. She paved the way for modern cooking shows, and in 2022, several TV projects have of- fered proof of Child's continu- ing influence on the culinary world. Monday, April 18, marks the conclusion of "The Julia Child Challenge" on Food Network and discovery+. Billed as the "first-ever prime-time compe- tition series dedicated to all things Julia," the series started out with eight home cooks pit- ted against each other in a se- ries of weekly elimination chal- lenges: Round 1 was about mas- tering the basics and recreating one of Child's signature dishes, while Round 2 invited competi- tors to prepare and plate their own dishes inspired by Julia. Only three self-proclaimed Child disciples remain, and in Monday's finale, they'll have to whip up a four-course meal consisting of a croque mon- sieur, duck a l'orange, boeuf bourguignon and a croquem- bouche. Chef Jacques Pepin, who col- laborated with his close friend in PBS's "Julia and Jacques Cooking at Home," will make an appearance, while judges Antonia Lofaso, Dorie Greens- pan and Brooke Williamson will select the winner of an all- expenses-paid, three-month cooking course at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris, where Child her- self studied in 1950. While that competition is winding down, a new episode of HBO Max's scripted series "Julia" drops each Thursday through May 5 on the streamer. In an interview with Variety, Food Network president Court- ney White suggested there was a solid connection between these 2022 projects: both were produced at a time when view- ers were stuck at home and looking to expand their cook- ing skills — and that's just the type of home cook Child had hoped to connect with in 1963, when "The French Chef " de- buted on WGBH. "The Julia Child Challenge" finale airs Monday, April 18, on Food Network and discovery+.
