December 5 - 11, 2021 WHATS UP! T11 Advance Pest Control 2 x 2 TAKE 5 Solution on page T23 Use the clues above and beside the grid to fill in the squares Gibson Chiro 3 x 2 BY ADAM THOMLISON TV Media Q: I just saw Alison Swee- ney in a new Christmas mov- ie, and I feel like it's the first time I've seen her in forever. What's she been doing? A: More than you think — other Christmas movies, most- ly. Alison Sweeney was a fixture on screens for ages, either as Sami on landmark soap opera "Days of Our Lives" or as the host of landmark reality show "The Biggest Loser." So, when she left "Loser" in 2015, the ab- sence was palpable, but really she's just settled into a schedule that other actors would consider busy. She's back on "Days" on a part-time basis, but she's also es- tablished herself as a Hallmark go-to, which means a lot of Christmas movies. She appears in this year's "Open by Christmas," as you say, but she also did last year's "Good Morning Christmas," 2019's "Time for You to Come Home for Christmas" and 2017's "Christmas at Holly Lodge." (If you noticed a gap there in 2018, so did she.) Sweeney says herself that Hallmark Christmas movies have become a more or less au- tomatic part of her schedule, at Hallmark's insistence. After tak- ing 2018 off, the network ap- proached her about doing 2019's "Time for You to Come Home for Christmas." "It sort of happened because I didn't do a Christmas movie this year, and some of my fans and other people were asking me about it," she said in a 2019 inter- view with SmashingInterviews. com. "So I thought, 'Why didn't I do a Christmas movie this year?'… I read the script and I loved it." Q: I just watched the new "Paranormal Activity" mov- ie, and I loved the puffer jack- et the lead character was wearing. Can anyone buy one of those? A: The "Paranormal Activity" movies are famously low-budget affairs. So it shouldn't be surpris- ing that, for a character-defining piece of clothing in the newest one, "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin," they picked something off the rack. Though, in this case, it's a virtual rack. The distinctive jacket worn by the lead character (played by newcomer Emily Bader, best known for the 2018 Lifetime movie "Stalked by a Reality Star") was made by a designer called Classic Rock Couture. The multi-pastel-colored puffer jacket with a sunrise mo- tif on the back is called the Dolly Western Mustard Bomber Jack- et, and interested fans can find it for sale in their shop on Etsy. com. For those unfamiliar, Etsy is a website where people register to sell their crafts or other distinc- tive items — a sort of midpoint between bespoke and mass pro- duction and exactly the sort of place you'd find a quirky item like this. Not all the "Next of Kin" cos- tumes were so easy, though. For those who haven't seen it, it's about a young trio making a documentary in a remote Amish community. Part of what makes the jacket in question so striking is how it contrasts with the traditional Amish outfits. (Unlike the jacket, those were made specifically for the movie by costumer Whitney Anne Ad- ams.) "It was such a challenge to create our Amish community," Adams wrote of the process on Facebook, continuing, "but I am so proud of what our team and I were able to accomplish." Have a question?
