T8 WHATS UP! December 5 - 11, 2021 BY RAYE SMITH TV Media WHAT'S NEW ON PRIME "The Expanse" - Season 6 The mission continues with the Season 6 premiere of "The Ex- panse," available to stream on Prime beginning Friday, Dec. 10, with episodes airing weekly on Fridays thereafter. Based on the series of novels of the same name by James S.A. Corey (the joint pen name of authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), this sci-fi epic follows the story of humanity hundreds of years into the future, when humans have colonized the solar system. With a fragile balance held between the colonies and war always too close for anyone's comfort, James Holden (Steven Strait, "The Covenant," 2006), Naomi Nagata (Dominique Tipper, "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," 2016), Amos Bur- ton (Wes Chatham, "The Hun- ger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," 2014) and their friends are ready to join the fight for the solar sys- tem against new and unexpected enemies. From series creators and writers Abraham, Franck and Mark Fergus ("Iron Man," 2008), this six-episode season is directed by Breck Eisner ("The Crazies," 2010). Shohreh Agh- dashloo ("House of Sand and Fog," 2003), Frankie Adams ("Mortal Engines," 2018), Cara Gee ("Empire of Dirt," 2013), Na- dine Nicole ("Casual"), Keon Al- exander ("Tyrant"), Jasai Chase Owens ("Loserville," 2016), Samer Salem ("The Handmaid's Tale") and Vanessa Smythe ("Mrs. America") return to star in the series. WHAT'S NEW ON DISNEY+ "Christmas Again" (2021) The old adage "Be careful what you wish for" gets a "Groundhog Day"-like spin in the new Disney original movie "Christmas Again," making its debut on Dis- ney+ on Friday, Dec. 10. Rowena (Scarlett Estevez, "The Grinch," 2018) is a spunky, high-spirited 11-year-old who is anything but excited for Christmas. With her parents going through a rough divorce, an underwhelming holi- day celebration with her sister, Gabby (Ashlyn Jade Lopez, "The Vampire Diaries"), and grand- parents Sofia (Priscilla Lopez, "Maid in Manhattan," 2002) and Hector (Tony Amendola, "Star- gate SG-1") is the final straw for Rowena. When her wish for things to go back to the way they were — with her parents still to- gether and all of their old holi- day traditions intact — becomes a not-so-idyllic reality, Rowena finds herself living Christmas Day on repeat. To get her life back on track, Rowena must learn to accept her growing and changing family as they are. Di- rected by Andy Fickman ("Race to Witch Mountain," 2009) and featuring a screenplay by Doan La ("Keep Hope Alive," 2020), the film also stars Gary Anthony Williams ("Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shad- ows," 2016), Daniel Sunjata ("The Devil Wears Prada," 2006), Alexis Carra ("The An- swer," 2015), Beth Lacke ("High School Musical: The Musical - The Series") and Meg Thalken ("ER"). WHAT'S NEW ON APPLE TV+ "For Auld Lang Syne" (2021) The Peanuts gang is back with the all-new holiday television special "For Auld Lang Syne," available to stream on Apple TV+ on Friday, Dec. 10. Charlie Brown's grandmother can't visit for the holidays, and the whole Peanuts gang is disappointed by the news. In an effort to cheer up herself and everyone else, Lucy decides to throw her own New Year's party while Charlie Brown tries to accomplish just one of his New Year's resolu- tions before midnight. Based on the beloved "Peanuts" comic strip by Charles M. Schulz, "For Auld Lang Syne" is written by Alex Galatis and Scott Mont- gomery ("The Snoopy Show,") and Clay Kaytis ("The Christ- mas Chronicles," 2018), who also directs the film. Charles M. Schulz's sons, Craig and Bryan Schulz ("The Peanuts Movie," 2015), executive produce the special along with Cornelius Uliano (also of "The Peanuts Movie," 2015), Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates and Wild- Brain Studios. And for those who can't get enough of Charlie Brown and his friends, Apple TV+ is also streaming more be- loved specials from the Peanuts franchise, including "It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown" (1966), "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" (1973) and 1965's "A Charlie Brown Christmas." WHAT'S NEW ON NETFLIX "The Unforgivable" (2021) Don't miss the gritty new drama "Unforgivable" when it lands on Netflix this Friday, Dec. 10. Based on the British miniseries "Unforgiven," written by Sally Wainwright, the film stars San- dra Bullock ("Miss Congeniali- ty," 2000) as Ruth Slater, a wom- an recently released from prison after committing a violent crime. The story follows Slater as she attempts to reenter soci- ety, a task made all the more dif- ficult by an angry public that re- fuses to forgive her for her past. Learning to live with her damn- ing history, Ruth goes on a jour- ney to track down the sister she was forced to leave behind. Ex- ecutive produced by Wain- wright, "The Unforgivable" is directed by Nora Fingscheidt ("System Crasher," 2019) and features a screenplay by Peter Craig ("The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1," 2014), Hill- ary Seitz ("Insomnia," 2002) and Courtenay Miles ("Mindhunt- er"). The film also stars Jon Ber- nthal ("The Wolf of Wall Street," 2013), Vincent D'Onofrio ("Men in Black," 1997), Aisling Francio- si ("The Nightingale," 2018), Vi- ola Davis ("How to Get Away With Murder"), Richard Thom- as ("The Waltons"), Linda Emond ("Lodge 49"), W. Earl Brown ("Preacher") and Tom Guiry ("The Sandlot," 1993). WHAT'S NEW ON HULU "Crossing Swords" - Season 2 "Crossing Swords" returns to Hulu with its second season on Friday, Dec. 10, and this hilarious stop-motion animated sitcom is not one to miss. Set in a fantasti- cal, medieval-esque kingdom, this comedy series for adults voice stars Nicholas Hoult ("Mad Max: Fury Road," 2015) as the good-natured peasant, Pat- rick. With big dreams of becom- ing a knight, Patrick lands a cov- eted job as a squire in the castle. His dream job quickly turns dis- appointing, however, when he discovers the kingdom is being run by greedy, promiscuous, self-serving charlatans. To make matters worse, Patrick's criminal siblings have come back to make his life as difficult as they can. Amid war, murder, double- crossing and romance, Season 2 sees Patrick off on another mighty adventure to do right in an often hilariously corrupt kingdom.
