Halloween is my favorite time of year, but this year will be different. We can dress up and have fun but if the coronavirus is still with us, we will not be able to trick or treat around the houses. Instead you can join Count Alucard (that's Dracula backwards) as he uses puzzles and games to clean up some very messy rooms. And while there's skele- tons and skulls decorating homes, discover how important bones are in your body. October is also Fire Safety Month and fires seem to be in the news a lot. Our page emphasizes the importance of smoke detectors and how we all need a plan for what to do in the event of fire. Let me introduce you to Rocky the Robo-Squirrel. While food storage is at the top of a squirrel's must do list right now, this robot sits and observes and stores information that goes to animal behavior specialists so that they can learn how squirrels communicate! The election is almost here and our news page explains the right to vote and what it means. Last but not least, this pandemic means we are all digital citizens now as we sign online to do our schoolwork. Learning to use tech- nology safely and responsibly is essential and we want to help YOU be a part of the online community in a way that is safe. Read about it on Page 16. So Happy Halloween everyone! Stay Safe but have fun too! 7 6 5 4 3 2 1 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 Standards Link: Reading Comprehension: Follow simple written directions. Box 1802 Sonoma, CA 95476 © 2020 by Vicki Whiting Happy September, We live in an age of information that can take us on adventures, give us access to knowledge, help us fulfil our dreams and lead us on to success in our lives. We all want that. We can achieve these goals by becoming better readers. Kid Scoop News helps you read and the more you read, the better you will read. So much depends on reading, from computer lessons to texts on phones. We use our Brain to read, and so we have a page here to show you how a brain works. Frederick Douglass was able to read and write even though he was enslaved. He went on to write a book about his life and he helped end slavery. September 17 is Constitution Day and one of the freedoms given us by the Constitution is the right to freedom of speech. Our spotlight page will help you understand what that means. And this issue has lots of fun things to do too from Outdoor Games that involve getting some exercise, to Space Rocks that explains all those rocks hurtling through space and then a page on Gorillas and how to draw one. I'm ready to read, read, read. This year I'm going to expand my mind and I hope you are too. Dear Readers, Wearing a Mask ........ Freedom of Speech ... Space Rocks .............. Draw a line connecting each pair of beetles that match. eetles have a special body part that makes them, well, beetles. This special body part is a hard exo-skeleton that covers their wings. Called elytra (El-ih-truh), these hard "wings" provide protection and more. Some beetles trap moisture on their wings, allowing them to survive in the desert. Other kinds of beetles are able to live under water because they trap air in their wings and keep it under the elytra. 14 Official kids mag www.kidscoop.com Vicki Whiting October 2020 why are skeletons are so calm? nothing gets under their skin!
