IF you don't go door-to-door trick- or-treating, don't worry there are still plenty of ways to get spooked, have fun and celebrate the last day of October: • house decorating - Decorate your house or room for Halloween by cutting out black cats and witch hats from construction paper. Or make some recycled paper pumpkins or put some ghost luminarias on the front porch, or in the window (see page 5). • have a halloween movie night - (Don't forget to mix candy corn with your popcorn). Here are some not-so-scary Halloween movies: o It's the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown o Monsters Inc. o Super Monsters Save Halloween o Goosebumps o Toy Story of Terror o Room on the Broom o Curious George: a Halloween Boo Fest o Paranorman o Hotel Translyvania o The Nightmare before Christmas o Frankenweenie o Dear Dracula o Coraline o Monster House o Pooh's Heffalump Halloween o Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit • have a monster mash dance party - Put on your costume and dance! Here are some suggestions for a Halloween playlist: o Monster Mash by Bobby Pickett o Ghostbusters by Ray Parker Jr. o Halloween Sharks by Pinkfong (Halloween version of Baby Shark) o Theme from 'The Munsters' o Purple People Eater by Sheb Wooley o Somebody's Watching Me by Rockwell o 'This is Halloween' from 'The Nightmare Before Christmas' o Monster Boogie by the Laure Berkner Band o I Put a Spell on You performed by Bette Midler o Theme from 'The Addams Family' o Five Little Pumpkins by the Kiboomers • zoom for halloween o Costume party - Your family and faraway relatives and friends can have a dress-up party via Zoom or other online social platform. To make it more fun, choose a theme for everyone's costumes. Or, make a rule at no one can use a store bought costume, so they have to be creative with things they can find at home! o Pumpkin carving/ painting contest Decorate your pumpkins "together" and have a contest for the best one. • weird science - Be your own mad scientist by mixing up a batch of Halloween slime (see page 22). Or combine vinegar and baking soda inside a jack-o-lantern for some oozing fun! Here are some fun snacks you can make using the best fruit of fall…apples! Apple chips IngRedIents • 2 Golden Delicious apples, cored and thinly sliced • 1 ½ teaspoons white sugar • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon dIRectIOns 1. Preheat oven to 225 degrees F. 2. Arrange apples slices on a metal baking sheet. 3. Mix sugar and cinnamon together in a bowl; sprinkle over apple slices. 4. Bake in the preheated until apples are dried and edges curl up, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Transfer apple chips, using a metal spatula, to a wire rack until cooled and crispy. Fruit Leather Make your own fruit leather out of apples and pears, and enjoy it as a snack any time. IngRedIents • 1 cup sugar • ¼ cup lemon juice • 4 cups peeled, cored and chopped apple • 4 cups peeled, cored and chopped pears dIRectIOns 1. Preheat the oven to 150 degrees F. Cover a baking sheet with a layer of plastic wrap or parchment paper. 2. In the container of a blender, combine the sugar, lemon juice, apple and pear. Cover and puree until smooth. Spread evenly on the prepared pan. Place the pan on the top rack of the oven. 3. Bake for 5 to 6 hours, leaving the door to the oven partway open. Fruit is dry when the surface is no longer tacky and you can tear it like leather. Roll up on the plastic wrap and store in an airtight jar. Apple Smiles A goofy snack for Halloween that looks like wax teeth! IngRedIents • 1 Red Delicious apple • 3 tablespoons peanut butter • 15 mini marshmallows, or more as needed dIRectIOns 1. Slice apple into 4 sections and cut away stem and seeds, Carve out some of the skin to form a "mouth" between the "lips." 2. Spread peanut butter into the "mouth." Arrange the mini marshmallows on top of the peanut butter to form the "teeth." Bite into the fleshy part of the apple so the "teeth" are facing outward. You can substitute almond butter, chocolate-hazelnut spread (such as Nutella®), sunflower butter, or cream cheese for the peanut butter if desired. You can substitute raisins or square- shaped cereal for the mini marshmallows if desired, for rotten-looking teeth!! Wacky for apples! Staying inside can be spook-tacular fun too!
